When those who knew Mary Kay well talk about her, her wonderful sense of humor always comes up. In her book You Can Have It All, she dedicates a whole chapter to humor, advising readers that “many people fail to see the humorous side of life, and consequently endure unnecessary stress. Oftentimes, situations that border on catastrophic are actually rather amusing—later. Admittedly, you might have to look hard for something funny, but, if you do, chances are you’ll find it.”

As one example of what she meant, from 1971 to the early 2000s, pink Mary Kay Peterbilt trucks crossed the highways across the United States carrying company products. Mary Kay was very proud of this fleet and she loved to meet with the employees who drove the rigs. Although they received a considerable amount of teasing about the color of their trucks, the drivers delighted in the attention they received from Mary Kay and other truckers on the road. At one meeting with the transportation employees, Mary Kay announced that the drivers would soon be wearing new pink jumpsuits with the company logo on the back, which prompted an uproar of protest from the drivers. She then broke into a wide grin, and with a twinkle in her eye, admitted that the company had no such plans. She had simply wanted to see their reactions. It was just one of the many practical jokes she loved pulling on people.

Mary Kay also knew how to take a tense situation and make a joke out of it, putting everyone at ease. More than four thousand people could testify to this aspect of her personality based on an incident in 1994. Mary Kay had just undergone rotator cuff surgery and had not recovered the full use of her arm by the annual Seminar in August. To make the best of the situation, she had slings made to match every one of her onstage outfits. She was to give a speech in Hall A of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and the backstage crew had wired her for the presentation. Because the staff always liked Mary Kay to make dramatic entrances, she was driven onstage in a white golf cart that, of course, matched her white suit.

Nancy Thomason stood at the front of the stage, watching the audience. When Mary Kay stood up, everyone gasped. Nancy whirled around to see what was wrong and saw that Mary Kay’s skirt had fallen down and hung around her knees. The company’s Senior Vice President of Sales, who was to introduce her at this event, was standing next to her. Cavalierly, he reached down, pulled up her skirt and zipped it. Undeterred by this catastrophe, Mary Kay walked to the podium and said, “Now, how was that for an entrance?”

This was the second time that Mary Kay’s skirt had fallen to her feet at an inopportune moment. While attending the wedding of a prominent Dallas newscaster and friend, Mary Kay went to hug a rather tall newsman for whom she had great affection. As she reached up, her skirt went down. Her immediate thought was, “I have just lost my skirt in front of all of these Dallas reporters.” It is a testimony to the respect that the Dallas community had for Mary Kay Ash that the media did not report one word of this, much to her relief.

On Mary Kay’s last trip to New York City, she appeared on CBS This Morning. Mary Kay had a policy to never reveal her age, especially to reporters. If they asked, she would answer, “A woman who will tell her age will tell anything.” After the interview, Paula Zahn came up to Mary Kay and asked, “Really, Mary Kay, what is your age?” Without missing a beat, Mary Kay replied, “Well, Paula, what is your weight?” Paula then dropped the question for good.
