Troop 55

Troop 55 Troop 55 is a Boy Scout Troop in Cedar Falls, Iowa. We meet every Monday night at 6:45 p.m. We are chartered through Orchard Hill Church.

We are back to normal meetings and we encourage any boy or girl who is 11 -18 to come and see what we do. We are a very active Troop and enjoy camping every month, including the winter. We try and do at least one "High Adventure Trip" each year for our older scouts. We are proud of all of our scouts and excited to have over 130 Eagle Scouts.

A huge thank you to Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum for hosting the Railroading Merit Badge class! Our scouts learned the purpose of various railroad lines and cars along with railroad safety before exploring the museum and, of course, riding the train! We rode the train to the Des Moines High Bridge and back to the station, about 8 miles round trip (with no air conditioning in the heat advisory 🥵). The favorite exhibit of the day was the centralized traffic control (CTC) panel (pictured last). What a fun day!!

Our Troop 55G had a week filled with extreme heat, then rain, cold, and wind, but above all we had a blast! We made new friends, earned merit badges, and overcame fears and obstacles. We are so proud of the Troop 55G girls and all they accomplished at Ingawanis Adventure Base summer camp this week!

Did you spot us in the Official Sturgis Falls Celebration, Inc. parade this morning?! What a great way to give back to our community. Well done scouts!

What a fun week we had! We explored all around Camp Howard Cherry Scout Reservation and definitely got our steps in each day - many miles hiked up and down the hills. A highlight was the campfires and the silly skits that made us laugh! Between the scouts we worked on many merit badges including: cooking, riffle shooting, archery, sculpture, metal work, weather, plant science, kayaking, climbing, leather work, chess, astronomy, orienteering, art, sustainability and more, whew! We spent extra time in the pool and ate plenty of ice cream to stay cool in the extreme heat! Luckily the scouts could purchase a cup in the Trading Post and pay $1 to fill it with soft serve as many times as they wanted - we took full advantage of this deal! Congratulations to Darius for making it into the Dime Club (shooting 5 shots in a row into a target the size of a dime), and to James for earning the Mountain Goat award for climbing to the top of all 5 tower walls, and to Titus for earning the Golden Monkey Knot award (a new award created just for him) for hitting the target with a tomahawk 16 times in a row - a camp record (the traditional award is the Monkey Knot for those who hit it 7 times)! Well done to all scouts for surviving a week at camp! And a shout out to our scouters who made it with them. We are thankful for the hospitality of the camp and for all the yummy food they served us - we appreciate you staff and counselors of Howard Cherry. These will be memories for a lifetime!

It’s going to be a fun {and hot!} week at Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation. We are excited for lots of fun, learning and scouting memories!

We finally made it to the Maquoketa Caves, the scouts have had this in mind for quite some time! After this weekend, we all have a new best friend: mud. But in all seriousness, our scouts remained in good spirits despite the heavy rains and worked hard to overcome some challenges without the troop trailer along. What a nice time and many scout memories were made!

We had a training hike for our upcoming Philmont trek on Saturday afternoon. It was a beautiful day to be on the trail! We leave in 3 months!

Wow! Thank you to everyone who came out to donate to our can drive today. So many cans and bottles! Our scouts who work on boxing up the glass have spent months and months collecting bottle tops that must be removed before redemption. It was a bit of a sad moment as we recycled them all today. But no worries, a new collection will begin next month. Thanks again for all who support our scouts!

Thank you to Frank Miller for visiting our troop last night and telling us about the aircraft we will see on our upcoming trip to Strategic Air Command! We are even more excited for our adventure there! Mr. Miller, thank you for your service to our country.

Congratulations to Liz for completing Woodbadge course, finishing her ticket and having her Beading Ceremony today. There was a great turnout from family, friends, Troop and Woodbadge staff. Woodbadge is an amazing training and leadership class taught by Scouts USA. It remains one of the best leadership classes I have taken. As good or better than any professional classes I've done. One you complete the course, you pick 5 items that you will complete, this is your "ticket". Once your ticket is done, you get your beads. Those who have completed the course wear 2 beads, if you have been staff on a course, you have 3 beads. If you are the leader of the course, you have 4 beads. Seeing someone wearing 4 beads is very rare.

Tonight was Troop 55's Court of Honor. It is a time to recognize those scouts that have earned Merit Badges and/or Rank Advancements. Between Troop 55 B and G, they had 46 Merit Badges earned, 23 Special Awards (Red Flannel, firem'n chit, totin' chit) and 9 Rank Advancements. Awesome Job Troop 55!

We climbed our way through the weekend at the City Museum in St Louis! We were thankful the weather didn’t stop our plans and we all had lots of fun. Scouting campouts make the best memories!

11 of our scouts attended the Citizenship in the World Academy today at Wartburg College. They learned from exchange students from Nigeria, Jordan and Russia (pictured). As expected, the meal was the favorite part with Chicken Keema from India, Lentils dish from India, Goat Stew from Africa, Um Ali a dessert from Egypt, Egg Curry from India, and 3-Cup Chicken from China. Scouts also snacked on Rice Crackers from Japan and Choco Pie from South Korea during the presentation. What a great way to experience life in other parts of the world! 🌎

Thanks to all who donated to our can drive this morning!! Your support is so appreciated and truly helps our scouts earn their way on their scouting adventures.

What a great winter campout weekend, while it was beautiful weather for February, Friday night was 18°. Saturday morning we learned about the 7 principles of Leave No Trace during a hike. We spent the rest of the day enjoying each other, riding peddle cars, chopping wood with axes and sawing using an axe yard, building forts, playing life size fooseball, Gaga ball and telling jokes. We ended our nights with a fire and sleeping in the lean-to buildings on our campsite. A big thanks to Greg for teaching our scouts about using Dutch ovens, the scouts baked an apple spice dessert and chocolate cherry dessert and the scouters were spoiled with Dutch oven lasagna. So many scouting memories made!

Off for a winter campout at Camp Ingawanis. Excited to learn about winter camping, play games and have FUN. A great weekend to earn a Red Flannel award, too! 🏕️

Thank you Darren from CrawDaddy Outdoors for teaching our scouts about kayaking and canoeing! Such a great afternoon learning on the water. A favorite part of the class was the intentional surprise tipping over of the boats! Our scouts are now prepared for even the unexpected in a kayak or canoe. I can see a water adventure in our future. 🛶
