Have you ever had an honest love affair with a place?

The West Gym is it for us. A quiet place at peace if you enter during the day, but a few hours later you are greeted by a hostile crowd and a heat that only the weak fear will catch up to them.

It’s a place that you would maybe question the love for until you enter it’s doors. It’s like the Fenway of Iowa- a gem in the middle of a sea of everyday rock buildings.

It’s History is something we honor and the chance to grace it’s bleachers and it’s old NI floor is an opportunity we relish in.

It’s a place where there are no numbered seats, just spaces honored by other fans for the ones who have shown up year after year.

Being early is something not taken lightly as the line forms outside the building on a cold winter’s night and if you’re late, well, it’s likely you’re gonna make some new friends squeezing in a row.

But That’s just it - the difference between here and so many other places - it pulls you In, first by your curiosity and then by your heart. The experience, the people, the traditions, the history, and the future that stands on the mat.

These fans will welcome you in (as long as you’ve got that Purple and Gold on of course). All the sudden you’ve built a family around you. They know your kids and chat with them, they relive memories of their kids through the eyes of your own, they know when you’ve been gone, and care to ask how you’ve been.

There is no other place where a bond is forged so quickly in what some would say is a uncomfortably unforgettable experience, and it’s our little piece of Heaven everyday.

If you can’t be grateful for the history, you can’t be thankful for the future. The men and women who have walked through those doors have gone on in many cases to teach the generations that now fill those Seats. A place just a few years shy of it’s 100th birthday, first made to bring males into Education field, now continues to create a space where our boys are challenged to become better men.

Families have a place they can visit and say “ I remember when”. A space to sit in, experience and feel where their dad or mom spent so much time of their time. A building who has withstood almost 100 years of the world changing around it, and it still sits strong whispering- let’s get to work.

So yes, we have a love affair with the West Gym. A place my husband spent watching his brothers compete, a gym floor he wrestled his own first match on, and bleachers where my sons and daughters spend watching their father coach. A place of humble beginnings, turned to cherished memories for a lot more than just us and our wresting community.

We had the best time! This kid had such a great personality. I could make an entire reel of his in between faces ( which I threatened him with) lol.

Just got my mini sauna session in taking these before getting another one in during this senior session! 🥵🥵🥵

Fun fact- Kyndall's family is one of the first families I did photos for when I started photography. I have taken countless family pictures for them and this is their second senior I have had the honor of shooting! I probably would cringe looking back, yet be proud of the growth I have seen in my photography over the course of taking their family photos year after year. It has been super fun to see this girl and her siblings grow up from afar. Thanks Mandi and family for being loyal to me throughout the years!
