Do you really need another reason to learn NRT? Here is another recent clinical experience by Tara Siffin, CNRT:
71 year old female fell face first on asphalt while taking walk in her neighborhood. She was alone, performed triage at home, bleeding was profound... so she called daughter to take her to hospital. Client’s face was roughed up! Ct scan negative for a concussion, x-ray positive for left nasal bone fractures. Ibuprofen and Celebrex for inflammation/ pain, antibiotics. 20 Stitches across bridge of nose and down to the tip. She had two black eyes and bruises down cheeks, cuts, and scrapes on nose and chin. Her anterior neck and face were swollen. Besides face pain, slight headache, she had sore spots where she contorted during fall on side and anterior abdominal area, and arm and wrist where she caught herself falling.

I started supine with basic NRT lower body work - did tweaking with advanced work. Response and release were incredibly fast. Moved to modified upper body basic, client remained supine. Abdominal area, arm, wrist was pain-free after basic NRT work. I moved to neck sequence, neck was very restricted, did two run-throughs -neck released. We decided to try advanced work on areas we could on her face and started with tongue sequence, smile muscles, temporalis, occipital/ frontalis, then redid neck. I did light lymph strokes and ta-da! ....Profound change!

I had her look in mirror after the session and she said “wow” and looked and looked. Her face went from very swollen and painful to resembling what she looked like normally aside from contusions and cuts! Aside from face looking better, we downgraded the “shock to her system” from fall and full-body stiffness and inflammation. I am convinced we also downgraded the post-traumatic stress, and emotional venerability she was experiencing. She teared up telling me what happened and reviewed how badly she could have been hurt ( knocking herself out and laying in the dark street bleeding to death). She left smiling and laughing. I see her again in two weeks. We need a “big break” publicity-wise somewhere to get NRT out to more people.

Ouch! Paper cuts, stubbing your toe, burning your tongue on hot coffee, stepping on a Lego...are things that HURT! Massage should NOT be on that list. I work with YOUR tolerance and preferences and don’t believe therapy has to hurt to be effective. Even if you want or need deep tissue, I try to treat the deeper muscles without much discomfort.
