As a “Show You Care” sponsor, designated Mercy and MercyCare locations are accepting donations for the program again this year. As the holidays near and a new year begins, Mercy is doing its part to stop the spread of illness. Due to the increased incidence of influenza, COVID, RSV and other respiratory illnesses in the community, Mercy Medical Center and MercyCare facilities have returned to universal masking precautions. Visitors, patient families, volunteers and staff members are once again required to mask at all times while in Mercy and MercyCare facilities. Mercy has temporarily returned to these precautions for the safety of hospitalized patients and the community. The changes will remain in place as we continue to monitor local rates of infection. Please join us in congratulating Carrie Bayles, ARNP, on her new role as a nurse practitioner at MercyCare Edgewood!

Carrie was no stranger to Mercy when she started working for the organization. Her mom (Pat) worked for Mercy and, growing up, her entire family received their care through Mercy providers. So, it made sense to work at Mercy when she was thinking about becoming a nurse.

Carrie began her journey at Mercy as a unit secretary on the surgical inpatient center floor in 2009. Through her experience, she learned that she did want to pursue nursing, so she earned her CNA and began working as a patient care technician on the same floor at Mercy during nursing school. After she graduated from nursing school in 2015, Carrie worked in Mercy’s Birthplace & NICU and also taught neonatal resuscitation. During this time, Carrie earned her bachelor of science in nursing and master of science in nursing. Most recently, she began practicing as a nurse practitioner at MercyCare Edgewood.

Throughout her education, Carrie received multiple scholarships from Mercy as she earned her RN, BSN and MSN, which she noted, “significantly helped with the financial burden of ongoing school.”

“I did my nursing clinicals at local hospitals," she said. "However, it did not feel as comfortable there as when I was at Mercy. The relationships with Mercy staff, as well as providers, was comforting and also helped me in advancing my career.”

Carrie found Mercy to be supportive in other ways, too.

“My coworkers and past managers, specifically in the NICU, were a large reason I stayed with Mercy,” Carrie said. “They make the work days so much better when you have friends around, and the support in furthering my career from my NICU director, as well as the NICU providers, was exceptional.”

In her current role at MercyCare Edgewood, she still feels the same belonging.

“My favorite part of my job is my coworkers, who have been extremely supportive and helpful in my transition to my new role,” Carrie said. “Everyone at the clinic is willing to help everyone, as well as have fun and support each other throughout the day.”

One difference she’s noticed from working at the hospital compared to the clinic is that you get to know your coworkers and patients faster because of the smaller space and regular patients.

“You get to know the patients and it’s a really nice part of family practice to get to see people coming back time after time for appointments,” she said.

After practicing medicine for more than 26 years, Dr. Jami Maxson has made the decision to retire. Her last day at MercyCare Edgewood was August 23.
