Every week I reflect on what went great and what didn’t — chasing that elusive (but attainable!) easy, joyful, fulfilling work week. 🙄 but also 🥳
This week SUCKED — here’s why —->
COMMUNCIATION
-with staff (I was out of town for a long weekend and whenever this happens I need to be more intentional and clear about what needs to be done in my absence)
-with customers, which leads us to —->
BOUNDARIES
-I have a lot of boundaries built in (like how to order, how far in advance to order, when we need all (like ALLLLLLLL….I know you hear me cake decorators) the details, etc. This week I realized I need to elegantly plaster them all over everything, and be more diligent about following up and re-iterating timelines and expectations (instead of assuming customers will take the lead, getting busy with the 1 million other things I am trying to get done and waiting for them to do it, only to be calling people on Friday trying to get answers and finish decorating)
PRICING
-this week just happened to have A LOT of labor intensive cakes. Fun cakes, but just time consuming. I need to balance my initial excitement for tackling and delivering these cakes with more refinement on the pricing end — you know, the ones that you say yes to and while you are actually decorating them (for wwwaaayyyy beyond what you anticipated), you are thinking “why didn’t I charge more?”
It’s important to reflect on the things that make your week suck, complain about them, and then look for action steps that you can take to make future weeks better (or at least suck less! ) ❤️👍🎂#cakeartist #cakebakery
Tell me what sucked about your week!

Just a reminder that anything is possible, even if it’s starting small or other people can’t see you vision.
When I’m looking for inspiration I love to do 2 things —-> OBSERVE AND ASK NEXT LEVEL QUESTIONS. Seeing “Christmas morning cereal” got me thinking about community and connection with my customers, and brain storming how I can infuse that into my menus year round. And how our menu can be a part of people’s memories. Side note….this is also so helpful when seeing what other people are doing and not getting frustrated or jealous. Asking what the core thing is that their idea represents and how you can infuse that into your own unique ideas. #cakebusiness #cakebusinessadvice #cakelove #smallbusinessthoughts #askbetterquestions #bakerybusiness #bakerylife #bakerylove #traditions #cakelife
Sometimes the simplest tweaks lead to better results, both for profit and and keeping the holiday chaos down! 1. Ask myself how I can simplify the execution of the menu (less flavors? Easier designs? Less piping?) without impacting the “wow” for the customer. 2. Communicate better with staff — labeling everything clearly (we didn’t sell a $24 6-pack because it wasn’t labeled as extra and we were worried we were missing someone, totally would have sold it if we weren’t wondering), have a resource for them for what we have/prices that is easy to access (it was on our POS system, but a physical sheet would have been better for walk-ins, and for them to see all at once when people asked questions), simplify how the orders print out (the headings I entered while making the form for an ideal website view were confusing when they actual printed out. 3. Communicate the menu to customers multiple times on multiple platforms….there is no such thing as posting too much, especially since people may not even see your prior posts, may need to see it multiple times before they purchase, and an extra post that gets to someone who already bought is just going to get them excited to get their order! It sometimes feels like overkill or awkward, but just think@of it as the perfect reminder at the right time for someone who needs a dessert! What would you do better next time??? 3 things @liquiddeath is doing that you will want to think about for your bakery business —-> 1. Ask amazing questions to get out of the box ideas for your business. They asked “how can water look cooler and compete with the fun branding that beer and soda have”. Water has been a basic need since the beginning of time, but they asked unique questions to guide how their product looks and it is resonating big time with their customers! 2. Think about the experience your customers are looking for. The experience is as important as the product. 3. If a relatively new company can turn water into a $1.4 billion company then remind yourself that there is always a place for you and your unique ideas and contributions. #bakerylife #bakerybusiness #smallbusiness #smallbusinessowner #smallbusinesstips #cakelife
