Healing after trauma can make it difficult to trust others, but it also makes it hard to trust our own thoughts and feelings.

Sometimes it’s really hard to know if that uncertain, urgent feeling firing in your brain is discernment meant as an alarm of present concern or irrational fear from unhealed past trauma. This is part of what makes healing from betrayal so complicated.

But there’s a statement my counselor has given me that truly helps me find clarity: “If you smell smoke, there is a fire somewhere.”

You don’t have to see the fire.

You don’t have to know all the details around the source of it.

You don’t have to know how big the fire is.

Rebuilding trust requires an absolute refusal on the other person’s part to fan any kind of flame from that past terrifying season.

Don’t accuse.

Don’t lose your mind over it.

Ask questions and operate with your eyes wide open.

Just don’t lie to yourself in the midst of inhaling the acrid stench of valid concern.

You are not crazy.

You are alert to reality. And you will now admit to yourself and trusted wise friends that smoke is staring you in the face.

You are brave and strong enough to do this. Now, don’t panic. Just ask God to show you what that reality is.

I’m praying you remember, you are worthy of more than scraps of love.

And that you remember, it is not unloving or unforgiving to finally say, “this is not acceptable.”

Communiation is key! 🗣
All new clients are sent a health intake form to be completed before your first appointment so I can prepare any adaptions that will need to be made to your treatment plan to keep you safe.
An in-person interview with follow up questions before you get on the table will allow us the opportunity to make sure we are on the same page about your treatment goals and get any questions you may have answered.

Some things your therapist will always want to know!

* Do you have any areas you do NOT want worked on?

Now is the time to tell us if you have ticklish feet that you would rather not have touched or hair you would rather not have messed up ;-)

* What is your pressure preference? Are you ok with being sore tomorrow?

Some people are fine with some therapeutic discomfort but prefer broad pressure only, some are fine with pointed deep pressure and know they may be sore for a day or two, others want to be able to sleep through the whole massage and prefer a lighter flowy massage.

*Do you want a full body massage with extra attention to your problem areas or are we just working on areas of concern?

Most of us have areas I call "attention grabbers" shoulders are always carrying tension or low back is always achy but you also want the benefits of a full body massage. Others need to spend the whole appointment time specifically on the area of injury/concern to get the therapeutic change they are seeking.

*Do you prefer a no talk appointment or are you more comfortable chatting?

The number one complaint about massage therapists is they talk too much! However, after years in practice I have found about half of my clients enjoy chatting through their appointment to help them relax or giggle through the therapeutic discomfort. When teaching I remind students to follow the clients lead. As a client I recommend always being up front with your therapist and letting them know during your intake interview if you prefer a no talk appointment. It will not upset or offend them; they will be grateful you let them know so they can meet your expectation.
