Our friend, Jorn, in Germany sent us a picture of his little boy with his big Schultüte (cone of candy) for his first day of school.
When children in Germany, Austria, German-speaking parts of Switzerland and Belgium, parts of the Czech Republic. and Poland set off for their first day of school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with this large cone, attractively decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies/sweets, school supplies, and various other special treats. The cone is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little sweeter.

Rödental – For 48 hours, the unofficial landmark of Rödental stood headless at the entrance to the town. Many people were worried about the guy. Now everything is fine again.

Strange scenes must have taken place on Tuesday morning at the entrance to Rödental on Coburger Strasse. Businessman Horst Weingarth looked out of his office window and could hardly believe his eyes: the head of the Wanderer, the oversized Hummel figure in front of the former Goebel site, had disappeared!

Sister Maria Hummel Day Sister Maria Hummel Day honors Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, a talented and courageous Franciscan nun who was famous for her paintings.

Thought you might enjoy reading the note Berta Hummel wrote to her father on the occasion of her First Communion! Unfortunately, her father, Adolf, was at WWI at the time. Berta was 9 years old in 1918.

The video begins with figurines & postcards from Sister (Berta) Hummel's artwork. In the village of Massing, children are shown coming down the steps of the primary school that the Hummel children attended. Walking on the main street of Massing is her father, Adolf, then entering the family home. Even then before the creation of Das Berta Hummel Museum in the home, there was a separate room displaying the figurines, The interview of her parents, Adolf & Victoria, takes place in the Hummel home then and shows several sites around Massing that she painted including the parish church. The originals of Sister (Berta) Hummel's artwork are caricatures of Bert's siblings as bumblebees and others are of places around Massing and of real people who resided in Massing when Berta was young.

The second video is of Goebel from 1986 and the production of MI Hummel figurines at the factory in Rodental. See if you recognize the glimpse of the then very young Master sculptor Marion Huschka.

Know what it is you are buying. Knowledgeable collectors realize that unless truly rare, the value for MI Hummel figurines are very low for common ones that were mass produced for decades.
If you don't know what makes a $25 Hummel figurine worth $2,500, better not buy it.

We have received word from Ted Bauer's attorneys that there will be a memorial service for Ted on
Thursday, April 11th, from 12-1pm
at Lasting Tributes (814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401).

Unfortunately, we can not be there to eulogize Ted but as you know we thought that Ted was one of the foremost experts in Hummel figurines. His knowledge and enthusiasm for collecting will be sorely missed.

März 1935 wurden die ersten Hummel-Figuren auf der Leipziger Frühjahrsmesse vorgestellt - der Startschuss für den internationalen Erfolg unserer "Hummeln". Bereits zu Weihnachten 1935 konnte man die ersten Hummel-Kinder in New York und Boston unter dem Baum finden.

Welcome meteorological Spring!

Our dear friend, Dieter Bauer, has passed away in his hometown of Kirchhof outside of Regensburg, Germany. After several months of hospital stays he came home to die in the home he loved with his wife, Lisa. Lisa and their children were his world and a smile always lit his face.
The story of our friendship with Dieter, Lisa, Ramona and Maria began in 1997 though we did not meet until the following year. While visiting the Goebel Factory in Germany we asked "might there be some local club presidents that would be interested in being a sister club to our local Hummel club. in America?" We posted several letters to clubs they suggested as email was not common in 1997.
Since Dieter did not read English but wanted to be certain to greet us properly it was several months before we received his response. After receiving our letter he mailed it to one of his daughters in Ca who translated it for him. He then wrote a reply in German and mailed that to her. She in turn wrote her father's reply in English, and mailed it off to him. At that point, Dieter was then ready to write the response he wanted to send to us translated into English. I still remember how excited we were when we received his letter. That was only the beginning of Dieter's and his Hummel club's warm welcome to Randy and myself.
In 1998 while in Germany we visited Dieter, Lisa, and Ramona and were overwhelmed by a lovely reception in our honor from all his club members. The following year the three "Merry Wanderers" came to visit us in America. We had such a wonderful time showing them Lancaster, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. We did alot of shopping and we will never forget Dieter saying that "his plastic (credit card) hurt!" Then our local club in Waynesboro gave them a warm welcome before we all set off for the Baltimore Hummel Convention.
Every year when going to Germany we made sure to spend a few days with our dear friends. Our German became better as did English for Dieter, Lisa, and particularly Ramona who as an adult has used her translating skills in her career. When we started selling rare European Steiff bears Dieter went with us to scout the stores looking for ones to take back to America. Dieter loved his Hummel collection but couldn't quite understand what collectors saw in stuffed bears!!
We will never forget celebrating Dieter's 70th birthday with him and his family and friends.
On one visit after showing Dieter and Lisa pictures of Sister Hummel's originals that were located in churches within hours of their home Dieter said "Ok, let's go!" We all set out the next morning for a day none of us would ever forget viewing Sister Hummels originals . Together the five of us enjoyed several trips to the Chek Republic, Octoberfest, lots of shopping, conventions and parades. It was through Dieter's determination that he not only reached "across the pond" to us but arranged a truly rare visit for us with Centa Hummel, Sister Hummel's sister with daughter, Maria as our translator.
When Dieter retired from owning his own insurance agency he enjoyed calling himself a house husband. Dieter was a very happy man, reading in his garden and enjoying his children and the grandchildren.
One Christmas we received a wonderful picture album that the entire family had put together for Randy and I that we might never forget our great times together. And we won't! How his entire family and all of us who loved him will miss that radiant smile of his but it will live on in our memories every time Dieter comes to mind.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A look into the doll world of Goebel and M.I. Hummel reveals that all of the Hummels were made by Goebel, but not all Goebels are Hummels.

Goebel dolls, with their bisque heads, can date back to the 1870s. Hummels were introduced in 1934, patterned after the drawings of Sister M.I. Hummel.
