Illinois will rewind all the way back to the early days of Fighting Illini Football when it takes the field against Michigan on Oct. 19, 100 years and one day after Red Grange’s historic six-touchdown performance against the Wolverines during the Memorial Stadium Dedication Game in 1924.
The Illini will don 1920s-themed uniforms to commemorate the 100th anniversary of that game, with the helmets, jerseys, and pants all designed to mirror the attire worn by Grange and the Fighting Illini football teams that represented the university during the early years of the program’s existence.

In a new paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research, Gies Finance professor Jialan Wang examines the extent to which autopay affects payment behavior for customers of a credit card serviced by a fintech company. Her study – one of the first rigorous studies of autopay and its impact – demonstrates that a small nudge to consumers can increase autopay enrollment. This enrollment could have an important impact on consumers’ credit outcomes.
Study: Is autopay a double-edged sword? New research finds that nudges do increase enrollment in autopay; however, consumers become more likely to just pay the minimum payment, according to working paper from Gies Professor Jialan Wang.

Generating creative ideas at work tasks employees with thinking expansively and being open to thoughts and concepts they haven’t previously considered. Which, of course, provides significant benefits to business because it can lead to new and innovative ideas in the workplace. But what happens after the brainstorming party is over?
New research co-written by Gies Business professor Jack Goncalo shows that engaging in brief creative ideation tasks can have detrimental consequences for one’s short-term health choices.
Study: Creative idea generation at work leads to indulgent behaviors afterwards Research co-authored by Gies professor Jack Goncalo finds that engaging in a creative-idea generation task subsequently led to more indulgent eating, drinking and exercise behaviors.

Two things fueled Michael Bednar’s journey to a professorship at Gies College of Business, where he has been teaching since 2008: growing up with family in academia, and having the positive influence of strong mentors in college.
“My dad was a business professor,” Bednar recalls. “He seemed to love being in the classroom with students.”
That love has been passed on: Bednar says he finds fulfillment in his students’ drive and practical mindset. “I try to find ways to make the material immediately applicable to students,” he says.

The pharmaceutical supply chain, an intricate web that creates new drugs for patients, operates largely under a veil of secrecy. But making it more transparent may have a chilling effect on innovation, according to Hanu Tyagi, who has joined Gies as an assistant professor of business administration.
“Clinical trials are largely opaque, but the push for transparency could be a double-edged sword,” said Tyagi. “Pharma companies are always experimenting with new drugs and are understandably excited about potential breakthroughs. But failures are often swept under the rug.”

Twin brothers Chris and Kyle Stefani, both majoring in accountancy and finance at Gies Business, were oceans apart during their semester-long study abroad trips, but they ended up with the same takeaway: a great study abroad experience isn’t determined by where you go, but rather how open you are to new possibilities once you get there.
In the spring 2023, Chris traveled to Sydney, Australia, and Kyle went to Barcelona, Spain. When they’d applied to Gies Global programs, both brothers chose Barcelona as their No. 1 pick. But Chris wasn’t deterred by not being selected for the program.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has announced 8,140 Dean’s List students, 323 Bronze Tablet honorees and more than 10,890 degrees and certificates awarded for the 2024 spring semester.
Dean’s List eligibility is limited to the top 20% of a student’s college class or curriculum. To be eligible, students must complete at least 12 academic semester hours taken for a letter grade.
University Honors and inclusion on the Bronze Tablet are the university’s highest honors for graduating students. Honorees, who are the top 3% from each college’s graduating class, must have a total grade-point average of at least 3.5 (out of a possible 4.0), although in recent years an average as high as 3.9 was needed to make the list in some colleges at Illinois.
The first Bronze Tablet, bearing 14 names, appeared in 1925.
