I am happy that today I helped two people with a real estate dispute come to an agreement that was better for both parties than a judgement they already had and saved them time, expense, and aggravation of trying to enforce or defend against the judgement. My dog, Dash, was stressed in the middle when there was yelling and banging on the table, but by the end, parties were friendly and calm and so was Dash 😁.

Having a Master’s degree in conflict resolution, it is rare that I learn something that I don’t recall being taught before, but I did this morning. Most people think to be persuasive, more is better than less, e.g. if 2 facts are 9 out of 10 in persuasiveness, adding a couple 6 out of 10 will help thinking 9+9+6+6 = 30 which is higher than 9+9=18. Yet studies show that people don’t add but rather average. Thus, adding 6s to 9’s averages to 7.5 where the 9s alone would be 9 and more persuasive. Here is an example, which is more persuasive to stop you from trying a prescription drug, “side effects could include sleepiness, nausea, mild headaches, stroke, dizziness, gas and itchy feet.” Compared to “side effects include stroke.”
