How a humble Indian fabric became a symbol of luxury in 1960s America | CNN Originally worn by Indian laborers, madras became a staple of preppy American fashion in the 1960s after advertisers spun its tendency to bleed in the wash as a selling point.

May 29, 1978 - The Cars: “Just What I Needed” b/w “I'm In Touch With Your World” (Elektra E-45491) 45 single is released in the US.
"Just What I Needed" is a song by The Cars from their self-titled debut album (1978). It reached #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #17 on the UK Singles chart. The song, which first achieved radio success as a demo, is sung by bass player Benjamin Orr and was written by Ric Ocasek.
Like several other tracks on The Cars, "Just What I Needed" originated as a demo tape recorded by the band in 1977. Ocasek had originally written the song in the basement of the commune he lived in at the time. Cars keyboardist Greg Hawkes recalled the first time he heard the song in an interview, saying, "I remember hearing 'Just What I Needed,' thinking ... 'Wow, that's pretty cool. It's got something sort of unique about it, its, like, nice and consise and ... fairly short pop song format' ... so I still remember hearing that for the first time.
The song first appeared in 1977 on Boston radio stations WCOZ and WBCN from the demo tape, along with its future follow-up single "My Best Friend's Girl". DJ Maxanne Sartori, who was given the tapes of these songs by Ocasek, recalled, "I began playing the demos of 'Just What I Needed' and 'My Best Friend's Girl' in March during my weekday slot, from 2 to 6 p.m. Calls poured in with positive comments." Shortly thereafter, it became one of the stations' most requested songs.

This particular craze is perhaps an extension of the overall fascination with taxidermy, and the ways in which the Victorians pushed creative boundaries with the controversial practice. Complete tableaux featuring dead bunnies studying in a library, for example, were all the rage, and giving the animals human characteristics after death – reading, having tea, playing croquet – was especially popular.
However, it’s still not totally clear how or why this became super fashionable with upper-class Victorians. But apparently, donning a dead, stuffed animal on top of one’s head was considered the ultimate in haute couture. Birds were a popular choice, although the more adventurous types went with squirrels, mice, and kittens…which, when you think about it, is especially sad and awful in its own way.

Very interesting!
The Glen Affric Tartan - now considered by many to be the oldest known surviving specimen of true tartan in Scotland (1500-1600). This Plaid Portion was found during peat cutting in Glen Affric in the Scottish Highlands. It is a bit of a mystery as to how and when the tartan found its way into the peat. Intricacies of pattern and coloring give it the distinction over an earlier form of tartan found at Falkirk in 1933, dating to the mid 3rd century AD. The Glen Affric Tartan is on loan to the V & A Museum in Dundee from the Scottish Tartans Authority. The exhibition at the V & A Museum, explores tartan's enduring legacy in Scotland and beyond. 🧡
Talk about timing…
Going thru some vintage jackets this morning and found this in one of the pockets.
The Man Who Invented Fifteen Hundred Necktie Knots For tie aficionados, knots are an art form—and a surprisingly difficult math problem.
Finding a good Shetland wool sweater at a reasonable price can be a difficult task. Prices seem to range from expensive to very expensive. I lucked onto an Anglo-centric store in Bologna, Italy, called De Paz. Their specialty? Shetland sweaters!
It's the largest selection of colors I have ever seen, including online sources(The image shows only a fraction of the selection).
De Paz imports Knoll yarns (knollyarns.com) from the UK and has sweaters knit in Bologna to their specifications. Crew necks make up the bulk of the color variety, cardigans follow with many in the same colorations. They have a limited number of cable knits and horizontal stripes as well. In addition to Shetlands, they have other British style goods: Aran sweaters, coats made with British cloth, caps, ties, etc.
The good news, very reasonable prices. Crew neck €115, Cardigan €148. VAT return not included.
The bad news, they do not ship outside Italy.
Great shopping experience. I wish I had the luggage space to buy 1/2 dozen instead of just two!
Another 5-star review…
Happy Halloween!

A collection of 54 ancient rings was brought together by a man from Leicestershire, who died at the age of 93 in 2003.
Rings included Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Viking, and Medieval. For example: a golden ring from Hellenistic East Greek period of 4th-1st Century BC, with cabochon grenades (one with 4 stones, looking like a bee with wings) or a gold ring from 2nd Century AD with a carnelian bust of Vibia Sabina, wife of Emperor Hadrian (on index finger, red, folded upside down).
Rings were collected in late 1950s and early 1960s. This is possibly largest collection of ancient rings ever seen outside museum. Man was an engineer who connected gas to homes. He worked all over country and bought many of the rings at auctions.
