CALLING ALL BOY SCOUTS, GIRLS SCOUTS, 4-H, FFA, AND ANY OTHER YOUTH ORGANIZATION: Who wants to receive one of these cool badges or ribbons?

The West Virginia Underground Facilities Damage Prevention Board (WVDPB) and West Virginia 811 (WV811), in partnership with the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), would like to recognize young adults from organizations such as Boy Scots, Girl Scouts, 4-H, , etc. for considering safe digging practices when they conduct a community service project.

The West Virginia Underground Facilities Damage Prevention Board CGA Safety Community Service Award can be earned by completing the attached form and submitting it to Carrie Clendening at WVDPB via email [email protected] or mailed to 206 Berkeley Street, Charleston, WV 25302.

Once the form is received, WVDPB will process the application. Carrie Clendening will contact you and make necessary arrangements to present you with the award. For more information, please contact Carrie Clendening at [email protected] or 681-264-9249.

A call must be placed to West Virginia 811 before every digging project, from simple landscaping projects like planting trees or shrubs, to building a deck or installing a rural mailbox. Every eight minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811. Don’t become part of the statistic – make sure to call 811!

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

1) One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for West Virginia 811 to notify all appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig.

2) Call 811 at least 2 days, and not more than 10 days, no including weekends and holidays prior to digging to ensure enough time for utility lines to be properly marked.

3) When you call 811, a representative from WV811 will ask for the location and description of your digging project.

4) West Virginia 811 will notify affected utility companies, who will then send a professional locator to the proposed dig site to mark the approximate location of your lines.

5) Once lines have been properly marked, roll up those sleeves and carefully dig around the marked areas. Remember to dig around marks, not on them, and also remember that time, erosion or root structure growth can shift the locations of utility lines.

Striking a utility line while digging can lead to injury, penalties, repair costs, and inconvenient outages, so consider this a friendly reminder to call 811 before you dig.
