Transforming landscapes and enriching communities, this hotel project stands as a testament to the growth and revitalization of Boone, NC. Our team is proud to play a role in the local community’s growth, supported in part by the expansion of the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, by reinvigorating the beautiful property off Blowing Rock Road that is now a TownePlace Suites by Marriott, a 92-room haven of comfort and convenience.
Replacing the former Mountain Villa Motor Lodge, the 4-story wood frame hotel breathes new life into the area, offering pet-friendly accommodations, full kitchens, and a heated indoor pool for extended stays.
Happy International Nurses Day! 🩺 This sunday, we honor the incredible dedication and compassion of nurses worldwide. Your commitment inspires us to design spaces that promote well-being and healing.
Novus welcomes Ashley Welchman to our Charlotte office!
Ashley grew up in New York but moved to North Carolina during high school. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she found a passion for design-build, construction detailing, and community involvement through design. With over eight years of experience in healthcare design, Ashley has joined the healthcare studio at Novus and is excited to jump in as a newly licensed Architect. Some of her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, camping, and gardening or just being outside with her husband Dylan and their two dogs, Piper and Abileen.
Welcome Aaron Green to our Asheville office! Aaron earned his Masters of Architecture from Clemson University with a Graduate certificate in CommunityBUILD, a program designed for architects with a passion for community-centric design and sustainability.
His dedication to fostering community engagement through the built environment led him to work in affordable housing development as well as high-end residential spaces in the Charleston area. Aaron is a licensed Architect in North Carolina and also a WELL Accredited Professional.
What better way to tee off Spring than a trip to one of golf’s most prestigious events? Last week, our Healthcare Studio Principal Ashley McCormick attended the 2024 Masters at Augusta National. She accompanied our friends Rob Still and Megan Smith of Cranston Engineering and Phillip Marino of Frampton Construction.
Four days of thrilling play wrapped up on Sunday evening when the prestigious green jacket was awarded to Scottie Scheffler. Thank you to Cranston Engineering for hosting such an incredible week of golf!
A lifelong passion for architecture has led Matt to join our firm as Principal and Office Leader of our brand-new Rocky Mount, NC location. His vast experience is preceded by early exposure to his parents’ careers in art and engineering, and a love of creating structures with Erector sets, Legos, and other building materials. After studying architecture at NC State University, Matt continued his education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he earned his master’s degree. He joins Novus with a passion to foster the vision of our clients and to discover more ways to shape the everyday lives of the Rocky Mount community through the built environment. When he is not in the office, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, especially outdoors on camping and hiking trips. Welcome to Team Novus!
Our hallmark is adaptability, and we take pride in establishing a thriving presence wherever our clients need us. We’ve already been working to bring Eastern North Carolina our innovative, “always new” approach to design, and that’s why we are laying down roots in Rocky Mount with a new office location. We look forward to continuing to build lasting relationships and making meaningful contributions to the built environment within Rocky Mount and beyond.
In the great Pancakes vs. Waffles debate, the latter definitely made their case yesterday. Our friends at Patterson Pope - Space Made Simple, Interface, and SESCO Lighting, Inc got our Wednesday started on the right foot by making the beloved breakfast staple for our Charleston office. Huge thank you to them for this mid-week treat!
Novus is having a fantastic time today at Clemson University speaking with students and faculty at the career fair! It’s always a joy to interact with up-and-coming young professionals.
We are thrilled to welcome Cecilia Lobato to our Springline team in the USVI! Cecilia is originally from Argentina, and is now living in the British Virgin Islands with her husband and daughter. She graduated from the School of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of Buenos Aires, Argentina and is currently pursuing a master's degree on Building Information Modeling.
She is inspired by the architectural work of Mies van der Rohe, Clorindo Testa, Glenn Murcut and Frank Lloyd Wright. She was drawn to architecture because of it’s opportunity to create and transform, to have the chance to turn her creative ideas into something tangible, making unique spaces and offering solutions to the community.
Fun fact about Cecilia is she loves Mate, the national drink of Argentina and a symbol of hospitality and companionship, representing the welcoming spirit of the Argentine people. It is a caffeine-rich drink made from chopped and dried yerba maté, prepared in a gourd and drunk through a silver straw. She travels with it everywhere and it’s her favorite beverage while working.
Welcome to the team, Cecilia!
Please join us in welcoming Harrison Knight to our Charleston office at Novus!
Harrison is new to Charleston, originally from Connecticut. He studied Architecture and Art & Architectural History at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, and spent two years in Rhode Island specializing in residential design and historic preservation. Creativity and building have always carried his interest, and drafting classes in high school ultimately inspired him to become an architect. Welcome to the team, Harrison!
Novus entered the new year on a high note by announcing staff promotions, a reflection of our commitment to foster professional growth within our team. Please congratulate the following members of Team Novus, and join us in celebrating their well-deserved advancement!
Since it’s National Eye Care Month, here's your reminder that eye health should not be overlooked (pun intended)!
Novus recently completed a renovation for Retina Consultants of Charleston, South Carolina's premier eye care specialists. Graceann has recently returned to the Virgin Islands after some time away for academic pursuits, professional endeavors, and traveling. Having graduated from Yale University in 2020, her post-graduation adventures led her to Copenhagen, Denmark, Auckland, New Zealand, and later to Miami, Florida, where she immersed herself in the realm of residential architecture. Despite the diverse landscapes and cultures encountered, her heart always remained tethered to the vibrant and unique beauty of the Virgin Islands.
“Growing up in St. Thomas instilled in me a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of architecture with community, culture, and nature. Witnessing the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 ignited a fervent desire to explore the pivotal role architecture plays not only in daily life, but more importunately in safeguarding communities from unexpected environmental obstacles. Joining the Novus/Springline team feels like a full-circle moment, and I am eager to embark on this next chapter. Excited to contribute, I look forward to the meaningful impact we can create together.” – Graceann Nicolosi
Novus is proud to announce that Joey Burnett from our Asheville office just passed his final Architectural Licensing (ARE) exam!

Please join us in welcoming UNC Charlotte grad Yamile McManus-Rojo as our newest Project Coordinator!
Originally from Lima, Peru where she completed the first years of her studies, her excitement to further her career in a new country was driven by a desire to connect with more cultures (and cuisines!).
We love Yamile’s design inspiration, described in her words as “the possibility of telling stories through creativity”. When asked “What does ‘always new’ mean to you”, she responded: “It means to reinvent yourself every day, even in the small things…to continue evolving and constantly learn.”
Welcome to the team, Yamile, we are thrilled to have you here!

We are thrilled to announce that our design for the Hilton Garden Inn in Haymarket, Virginia has been honored with an award for 2022 New Build of the Year by Hilton Hotels & Resorts. The unique sense of exploration that comes from travel is what inspires us to design hospitality environments that put guest experience at the forefront, and this project was no different. Together with our partner Purpose Lodging, this hotel was built to persuade connection with spaces that are not only functional and efficient, but genuinely authentic, pulling in custom elements to juxtapose traditional themes with a 21st century aesthetic.

Always New
Novus Architects took shape in 1992 – with one architect working for one new client. Strong, long-term relationships are the heart of what we do, and we never take for granted the trust clients place in us to listen intently to their needs, craft a custom process, gather a team with the right skills and passions – and together, bring to life spaces that serve people.
Every day, we take our diverse interests and collective experiences and put them to work in wholly new ways – again and again. Because while we may carry the title of architect, planner, or designer, we see ourselves as consultants with an architectural perspective. The truth is, we do our best work when we challenge the notions of what an architect, designer, or planner can or should do and step beyond traditional roles to create new, unique processes that bring simplicity and clarity to the most complex projects.
To build highly functional, beautiful spaces: medical facilities that nurture both physician and family, schools that inspire and engage both children and teacher, community centers that invite both dialogue and worship, is to constantly study how people move in and through spaces, how design influences human interaction, discovery, and deep connection.
For us, that lifelong study is, like people themselves, always new, always challenging, and ever changing. So we focus on process, priorities, details, and communication. We embrace ingenuity, collaboration, and adaptation, because for us, a space is more than any hospital, school, or house of worship, it’s an always-new way of connecting and serving people.
