Monday's traffic information for Charleston Sternwheel Regatta prep!

Capitol Street returns [mostly] to normal on Monday and Tuesday before closing for Outdoor Dining on Wednesday (the 1st day of the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta)! Kanawha Boulevard continues to be closed between Clendenin Street and Hale Street.

Traffic Alert: Starting at 9A through noon, folks in the area of the Criterium route may experience delays due to course preparations. Rolling and partial closures can be expected. We appreciate your patience as we prepare for this evening!

The race route includes the parts of Court Street, Lee Street, Summers Street, Quarrier Street, Hale Street, and the Boulevard in red on the Criterium map.

Information regarding closures and parking for Thursday!

The first Criterium Race is tomorrow and we couldn't be more excited about this fast-paced road race. As you plan your commute/participation tomorrow, here are some things you need to know.

📍The race route starts on the Boulevard >to> Court Street >to> Lee Street >to> Summers Street >to> Quarrier Street >to> Hale Street >to> Kanawha Boulevard.

⚠ Intermittent rolling/partial closures will happen along the race route for course preparation between 9A and noon.

⚠ Due to the speed of this race, hard closures will be in place along the race route. ‼Anyone wanting to drive across the race route to exit/enter must do so BEFORE the road closures are in place at approx. 5P.‼

✅Pedestrians will be able to cross the race route at the designated areas which can be viewed on our Traffic Info page.

🚫On-street parking will not be available on the race route to allow for staging of fence and other materials along the race route.

✅Starting at 5P, parking will be available at:
🅿️Summers Street Garage (via 2-way traffic on Capitol Street)
🅿️City Service Center Garage - 915 Quarrier St
🅿️Cinema Garage - 612 Washington St

The Time Trials will continue on Wednesday, May 15! Please note the changes to the Kanawha Boulevard closure (specifically Ruffner Avenue to Brooks Street).

🔶 The Kanawha Boulevard closure extends from Stockton Street (Patrick Street area) to Daniel Boone Park.

‼️ [UPDATED 5/14] ‼️ Westbound lanes (residential/business side) of Kanawha Boulevard (traveling toward Patrick Street), from Wertz Avenue to Ruffner Avenue will be open (including on-street parking). Westbound lanes of Kanawha Boulevard from Ruffner Avenue to Brooks Street will now be closed to traffic and parkers. This was done to ensure the safety of the cyclists participating in the Time Trial on Wednesday.

Stay up to date on traffic pattern changes, road closures, etc as our amazing City prepares to host the USA Cycling Pro Road Cycling National Championships!

The City of Charleston is preparing to welcome the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships – the premier cycling event which will serve as a qualifying event for the US Olympic Team this year –to take place May 14 – 19, 2024. To help community members, businesses, and those traveling to and from Charleston navigate daily commutes, race routes, and access to and from various events and places – including voting precincts – the City has prepared a robust day-by-day list – including access to and from interstates/US routes, race route turn by turns, road closures, parking information, and other helpful information – from Sunday, May 12 to Sunday, May 19.

“Our City Team – in collaboration with the Charleston CVB, USA Cycling, WV DOH, along with many folks in our community – have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming Pro Road National Championships,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “As with any large-scale, multi-day event – there are a lot of moving parts to consider – commuting, access to events and places, and always public safety. In addition to the extensive coordination and collaboration to ensure the event runs smoothly and folks can get around town, our Police and Fire Departments have been working to make sure we have a plan in place to respond to emergencies that may arise in our community as well as provide coverage for this premier cycling event.”

In preparation for the upcoming Primary Election on Tuesday, May 14 – voters are advised that Precinct 406 (Mary C. Snow Elementary School), Precinct 170 (Terrace Park East), and Precinct 174 (Carroll Terrace) will be accessible via alternate route during the Time Trials taking place on Kanawha Boulevard from approximately 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Voters may early vote through May 11 anytime between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
