Check out this field trip Springfield Elementary School garden club students in Charleston took with the Master Gardeners! ♻️
Over the past two days, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade gardening club students were able to visit the Charleston County Composting Center, which is operated by McGill Compost. During our trip, students learned how food scraps from our cafeteria, and other local schools and restaurants, get combined with local yard debris to create compost. Some of this compost is in our school garden right now! We got our hands dirty as we explored the science of how microorganisms and mushrooms work together in breaking down our “waste” and turn it into compost that helps crops grow. Did you know that temperatures in compost piles can get up to 200 degrees?!
