24/7 Access Lifesaving Stations

When a person suffers cardiac arrest, there is a one in five chance a potentially life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is nearby.

But up to 30 per cent of the time, the device is locked inside a closed building.

06/17/2024

Westerly, RI deploys another 24/7 access AED, bringing their total to well over 20.
This device serves a high-traffic beach as well as live music events and drive-in movies at this location.
See the Westerly AED map here:

Westerly was an early adopter of 24/7 access AEDs, deploying their first nearly 12 years ago.

Securing Tomorrow: The Role of Grants in AED Accessibility
by Karen Perkins, MD

Recently, while staying in an Airbnb nestled in a quaint Tasmanian neighborhood, I was struck by the sight of an outdoor Automated External Defibrillator (AED) enclosure stationed prominently near the driveway of just six houses. I found it reassuring that even in this rural area, there was life saving equipment at the ready. However, it was also a stark reminder of the disparity in access to critical medical equipment, especially in under-resourced areas.

The quick deployment of an AED is critical in a cardiac arrest but there exist massive disparities in AED access not only internationally, but in our own backyard. The United States, despite being a global leader in many aspects, has significant inequities in the availability of AEDs, particularly in communities with limited resources.

Way to go! Kudos to The Aliver Foundation: Helping Hearts Since 2024 and the Garwood Fire Department.

Thank you to the all volunteer Garwood Fire Department for their incredibly generous donation to The Aliver Foundation. We appreciate everything you do for our community so very much and couldn't be more humbled.

We did a little bit of math this morning and it looks like we're ready to purchase another all weather, climate controlled, tamper proof AED enclosure and device for an outdoor recreation space. ❤

Kudos to Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events and all those involved in deploying 24/7 accessible AEDs in their first five locations.
Bravo! Bravo!

🆕📣The City of Fredericksburg has begun a phased process of installing AED devices in City parks and on City trails. Using donations from the Knights of Pythias and from Mary Washington Healthcare, AEDs are now available in Memorial Park, Old Mill Park, W.L. Harris Park, and Alum Spring Park at the Virginia Central Railway Trail.

The AED devices are located in climate-controlled security boxes that require users to call 911 to obtain the access code. By dialing 911, first responders are alerted that emergency services are required, and the caller will be on the phone with a dispatcher who can assist them in the use of the AED. Donations will continue to be solicited so more AED devices can be installed in parks and on trails.❤

It is really inspiring to see the continued placement of AEDs in outdoor environments.
Strategic placement with 24/7 access will help provide defibrillator coverage to larger numbers of people and reduce time to first shock with lifesaving AEDs.

They can’t help you if they can’t find you.

Your house number may not seem to be a very important element of your outdoor landscaping efforts but you shouldn’t disregard this important detail. If you can’t see the house number when you drive up to your home in the daylight then imagine how difficult it would be for responders at night, even more difficult in stormy conditions.

Using large house numbers that have reflective characteristics, placing the numbers near the street entrance to your home and keeping plant growth or snow mounds from blocking the numbers are all ways to improve a more timely response to an emergency.

Large, prominently displayed, well-lighted numbers that are visible from the road will help speed a response in an emergency.

While it is ideal if someone can be waiting outside to signal the emergency responders as they arrive, even making sure an outside light is on can also be helpful.

Try this test to determine whether or not your home is clearly marked and visible:

Drive past your home and try to locate the house number;

Repeat this step at night; from both directions.

Materials to improve address visibility are readily available from stores in your community.

There are many people willing and able to help you in an emergency. You can make their job a little easier by making your address more visible.

They can’t help you if they can’t find you.

Excellent and kudos to all involved!

ATMs and coffee shops may be among the best spots to place lifesaving defibrillators.
Focusing on Toronto, the Canadian researchers found that many of the city's cardiac arrest emergencies happened near coffee shop chains and ATMs connected to large banks.
In fact, those businesses accounted for eight of the top 10 hot spots.

Coming soon to a field near you!

The Town of North Andover is expanding its Public Access Defibrillation Program across all fifteen recreational fields. Each field will be equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest event.

The Outdoor AED Enclosure contains a Heartsine P350 AED, Adult Pads, Pediatric Pads and AED Prep Kit. AEDs will be available from April through October at all field locations.

In the event of a cardiac arrest, a bystander will call 911 and provide their location which can be found on the front of the Outdoor AED Enclosure. The 911 dispatcher will provide the caller with the access code to unlock the box so that the AED can be deployed.

These Automated External Defibrillators were purchased and installed utilizing Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021, presented by the North Andover Health Department, Fire Department, Public Works Department, North Andover Town Residents and approved by the North Andover Select Board in October of 2023.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the AEDs by watching the two manufacturer videos posted below.

An excellent example of what is possible through the strategic placement of 24/7 accessible AEDs that are integrated with 911 and 911-connected mobile crowdsourcing apps such as PulsePoint, Heartrunner, GoodSAM and others.
This strategy lends itself to neighborhoods, athletic fields, business parks and other settings.
Reducing time to first shock will save more lives.

Congratulations to Dr. Steve Brooks and the dedicated team behind Neighbours Saving Neighbours for their first save! 👏

It was a regular Saturday when Mark Sherwin received an alert on his phone, notifying him of a cardiac emergency nearby. He rushed to the scene, where he performed CPR and used the AED he brought with him to help the person’s heart regain a normal rhythm.

Mark is a volunteer with the Neighbours Saving Neighbours Community Responder pilot program in Frontenac County. This innovative program is working on increasing survival rates for victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

When a 911 call comes through, dispatchers engage emergency services and then input the address of the emergency into an app. The app notifies any trained volunteers within 10km through an alert on their phone and then guides them to the emergency with their phone’s native mapping software.

If the program proves to be a success, it will be rolled out to other neighbouring communities and potentially across Canada.

Congratulations to Mark and the Neighbours Saving Neighbours program for helping save more lives from sudden cardiac arrest!

We are proud to be partners in a program that is empowering the public to take action before medical help arrives.

Emergency AEDs installed in Spellman Park as Stonington seeks to improve response times
STONINGTON — In a cardiac emergency, every second matters. That is why Stonington is moving forward with efforts to improve emergency response times by providing life-saving tools to the community.
The town has installed automated external defibrillator devices at three separate locations in Spellman Park, one of the town’s most widely used recreational spaces. The devices are held in weather-proof containers and are accessible to the public by calling the 9-11 dispatchers in an emergency to receive the code.

Stonington Human Services - Parks & Recreation begins deployment of 24/7 accessible AEDs. Bravo!
AEDS INSTALLED IN SPELLMAN PARK
Three [3], outdoor, AED cabinets have been installed in Spellman Park and are now available to the general public in case of an emergency. 9-1-1 dispatchers, when responding to an emergency, provide a code to gain access to the units. The secured cabinets provide lights and are temperature controlled, protecting the AED unit itself from “year-round” weather conditions.
Spellman Park, located behind Stonington High School and Stonington Human Services at 166 South Broad Street includes: [6] athletic playing fields; a large playground; outdoor exercise equipment; [2] outdoor basketball courts; [6] tennis courts and [2] Pickleball courts. It is not only home to the Stonington High School athletic teams (The Bears!), but it also plays host to numerous youth leagues and camps on a year-round basis.
An AED (automated external defibrillator) is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock or defibrillation to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Using an AED within 5-8 minutes of a heart distress can significantly increase survival rates.
Plans are to install additional units at other Town park locations as funding becomes available in the future.

Our outdoor enclosures are just that - outdoors! That means they see bugs, dirt, rain, snow, bird p**p, little kid boogers - all of it.

But what's great about the CE-TEK 4000 enclosures is that they are designed to face all those elements and more. With a towel and your favorite cleaning spray, the polycarbonate exterior gets back to ✨sparkling✨ in just minutes!

Daylight saving time will begin for 2024 on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time, when our clocks will go ahead one hour, part of the twice-annual time change that affects millions, but not all, Americans.

This is an EXCELLENT time to inspect and maintain smoke detectors and automated external defibrillators to ensure they're working properly.

These devices are proven lifesavers, but a malfunctioning one may have devastating consequences.

Sisters@heart presents 5 Publicly Accessible AEDs to Town of North Attleboro

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MA--- Town Manager Michael Borg is pleased to announce that Sisters@Heart presented its first donation of a publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AED) device to the Town of North Attleborough during a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this week.

On Monday, Jan. 15, Sisters@Heart hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at Town Hall alongside Town Manager Borg, Chief Christopher Coleman, Senator Paul Feeney and Representative Adam Scanlon. The ceremony recognized the first installed public AED device at Community Field gifted to the Town by Sisters@Heart.

“Having immediate access to an AED device during a medical emergency can make the difference between life or death,” Town Manager Borg said. “Our community is extremely thankful to Sisters@Heart for making this generous donation and to all who helped secure funding, including our local and state representatives. AED devices do make a difference and there is a need for them in our communities, so we were extremely happy to partner with Sisters@Heart to make this happen in North Attleborough.”

Added Rep. Scanlon, “I am thrilled that Sisters@Heart was able to put this money to use so quickly, and get these defibrillators up and running at Town Hall. This is a wonderful organization run by wonderful people that I was happy to support in last year’s budget, and I will always look for more ways to support the work they do to combat heart disease and stroke, and support families in individuals affected by them.”

This generous donation was spearheaded by Sisters@Heart, a local non-profit organization founded and directed by North Attleborough residents Lisa Deck, Jamie McHoul-O’Hanlon and Caitlan Kane. To assist in saving lives in the event of a cardiac arrest or other heart-related illnesses, Sisters@Heart donated five AED devices to be installed throughout the Town for public use.

The AED devices will be located at Veterans Park, the High Street Fields, Mason Field, the Beaupre Field Concession Stand and Community Field. Each device will be housed in a weather-proof, heated and lighted cabinet that can be accessed by the public in the event of an emergency.
