When hurricane season comes, it means more than just the arrival of powerful storms. For those who live in areas affected by hurricanes, it means it's time to be on guard for whatever Mother Nature might send your way. Hurricanes can damage homes, businesses and much more. When it comes to your pool. Please leave this care to the professionals. Yes, pools can also get contaminated with dirt, silt, bacteria, and other organic debris.
When the forecast calls for hurricanes or strong tropical storms in your area, we send our techs out to properly prepare the pool chemically, but unfortunately unforseen acts of nature do happen, and excessive debris and flooding that require additional chemicals, additional debris removal time during service, multiple visits, and even the use of an additional pump system to remove fine sediment and drain flood waters happen. This can result in additional cost after the storm has past. The good news is that your pool will not be in this condition for long because we are one of very few companies that make sure we maintain state wide emergency reentry status so if there ever is an evacuation, we will be allowed back in first to resolve any stagnant water or downed electrical issues with your pool.
Below, you'll find the only responsibilities we need you to perform in order to protect your pool against potential issues brought on by a hurricane or tropical storm.
1. Don't Empty the Pool
Water in the pool provides weight to keep the pool in the ground. An empty pool can float or pop out of the ground due to pressure from excessive ground water caused by heavy rains.
Also, keeping water inside your pool, despite the possibility of contamination, will provide an easier cleanup compared to an empty pool. Pools do not defy gravity. They do not “overflow.” Once they are full consider the rain to be the same as if it is falling on a concrete patio on your back deck. Where the issue then resides is if the builder graded the pool with the proper run off when the pool was built. This is when we would need a text with a picture. If the water is running towards your home and you do not have drainage to keep it from coming inside. That is when we need to come out for an emergency call. You should however have drains to prevent this from happening and almost all of you have an overflow as well to slowly keep the surface water draining off. Please do not attempt to drain water yourself. Call us and we will do that for you. A miscalculated valve turn or draining too much could harm your pool and equipment. Let us take care of it.
2. Turn Off Power
Another key to pool hurricane preparation is making sure circuit breakers at the main electrical panel are turned off. Pool equipment such as pump motors, pool lighting, automatic chlorinators, and heaters should not operate during the storm.
This will also prevent flood water debris from clogging your filter and causing damage to your media, clogging lines, and harming your pump.
3. Remove Loose Items
Chairs, tables, pool toys, and other loose items can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. It’s best to store them inside, away from the storm. Never put objects in the pool to protect them from a storm. Not only can this damage the objects, but it can cause serious metal staining problems in your pool water. This is especially true for most patio furniture.
4. Don't Cover the Pool
Hurricanes can cause falling branches and other flying debris that may damage pool covers. It's easier to remove debris from the pool than it is to replace a cover. Keep the cover off the pool to prevent unwanted damage and avoid dealing with a difficult removal, which may result from the cover being full of heavy water and debris.
5. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words.
If at any point you feel something is not right send us a picture through text. We can easily diagnose most issues through a few good pictures. If we see anything alarming we will be on our way.
Please focus on keeping yourself and your loved ones safe during any storm or emergency situation. We will take care of whatever happens with the pool once everyone is safe and sound. Also if you evacuate please let us know so we are aware which pools do not have eyes on them.
Thank you and stay safe.

We wanted to share some tragic news about one of our own, Dan Morris, and his family. He has been dedicated to his craft and became a Watershape University International Watershape Institute (IWI) member last year.
If you have met Dan in a WU course, you know he is the most genuine and caring guy who loves his family.
They had a fire at their house this month, and thank God everyone is ok. But they are rebuilding now and need support.
We are a tremendous industry that rallies together when one of our own needs help. If you can spare even a small amount to help this wonderful family, we would appreciate it, and I am sure they will as well. Every little bit helps!

A giant ship's engine broke down and no one could repair it, so they hired a Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience.
He inspected the engine very carefully, from top to bottom. After seeing everything, the engineer unloaded his bag and pulled out a small hammer.
He knocked something gently. Soon, the engine came to life again. The engine has been fixed!
A week later the engineer mentioned to the ship owner that the total cost of repairing the giant ship was $20,000.
"What?!" said the owner.
"You did almost nothing. Give us a detailed bill."
The answer is simple:
Tap with a hammer: $2
Know where to knock and how much to knock: $19,998
The importance of appreciating one's expertise and experience...because those are the results of struggles, experiments and even tears.
If I do a job in 30 minutes it's because I spent 20 years learning how to do that in 30 minutes. You owe me for the years, not the minutes.
