🎉 GWV welcomes our newest Board Member, Shelly Hussell, Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Huntington Bank. 🎉

Shelly Hussell is a proud native West Virginian. She graduated from West Virginia State University with a B.A. in Economics and is a graduate of Campbell University’s Southeastern Trust School in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Shelly currently serves as a VP and Portfolio Manager in Huntington Bank’s Private Bank. An active member of her community, she is a member of the Charleston Estate Planning Council, the Greater Huntington Estate Planning Council, Women for Economic and Leadership Development (WELD), and is a volunteer classroom reader for WV Read Aloud. Generation WV’s emphasis on creating meaningful, long-lasting careers in West Virginia was what attracted her to the organization.

Shelly lives in Charleston with her husband, John, and their children, and border collies. When she is not at work, you will find her hiking, running, playing tennis, gardening, cooking, traveling, and kayaking with her family.

Logan Schmitt is an illustrator who grew up by the woods in Wheeling, West Virginia. His fascination with nature and the small places of the forest are ever-present in his work and are a continual source of inspiration. Stylistically, he uses lots of lines and flat colors to present animals and other natural elements in an otherworldly light. When he isn’t illustrating posters for bands or drawing frogs and fish, you can find him somewhere in the woods or down by the creek.

🥂 VENUE SPOTLIGHT: GWV's Summer Night Soiree will take place at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works on August 24, 2024!

In a world consumed with bigger, faster, cheaper, J.Q. Dickinson Salt Works goes against the grain, making small batch, artisanal salt, produced over a length of time determined by the whims of the West Virginia sun.

J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works was established in 2013 by siblings Nancy Bruns and Lewis Payne. They come from a long line of salt makers, the first being their ancestor, William Dickinson, who kicked off his salt enterprise on that same family farm in Malden, WV, back in the early 1800's.

👏 From RESOURCE RURAL – Lindsey Crittendon describes Huntington as home, not only from a geographical perspective, but also to convey the general feeling of the small city that sits on the Ohio River.

Thanks to NewForce, Crittendon can remain living and working in her hometown. Administered by Generation WV, the fully remote and tuition-free coding school is investing in training a budding West Virginia tech workforce, providing opportunities for a local population that sometimes has to look beyond state lines for employment,

Crittendon landed a job right out of the academy and has since progressed to become a lead software engineer with a management consulting services company based in McLean, Virginia with an office right in Huntington.

“The NewForce program has drawn a lot of attention to the talent that’s in the area and has actually brought jobs here,” Crittendon said. “I can really see West Virginia becoming a second Silicon Valley. We have a lot of underappreciated, undervalued talent that I really think translates really well to tech.”

💻⚡GWV's Broadband Program Director, Annie Stroud, is headed to Denver next week for the Mountain Connect Broadband Development Conference! Annie will present on ways in which the Appalachia Digital Accelerator supports Appalachian communities by enhancing broadband connectivity and digital skills to drive economic, social, and health improvements.

Managed by Connect Humanity, the Accelerator aids 24 grantees across 68 counties within the region to foster local leadership, build capacity, and create robust digital connectivity plans. This session will spotlight the unique obstacles encountered in rural broadband planning and offer data and examples of how communities are effectively addressing these challenges head on.

🌟 GWV’s Fellowship Session 3 kicked off this past weekend in New River Gorge!

Session 3 was all about going beyond your comfort zone… 🌄
(like walking the entire 3,030-foot length of the New River Gorge Bridge!)

Fellows had the opportunity to meet with community leaders and speakers from WV Community Development Hub, who hosted a workshop on what communities need to thrive. They also met with folks from West Virginia Tourism, who talked about their current marketing initiatives around the increased tourism in West Virginia. The Fellows ended their session with a presentation by the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, on the history of the National Park Service and the changes they’ve seen since becoming a Designated National Park.

Jade Irving, Senior Project Officer at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and Generation West Virginia Board Member, led the first ever Fellowship and NewForce joint session on Executive Mindsets, which focused on building confidence, the power of effective communication, and strategic goal setting.

It was truly inspiring to be surrounded by some of the brightest and most talented young professionals in the Mountain State! 🌟
