Utilizing funds from Mountains of Hope, Spotted Owl Healthcare Organization implemented the THRIVE program for individuals with a cancer diagnosis or with an increased risk of getting cancer . THRIVE focused on health from a whole body perspective and included group activities such as cooking classes and art therapy classes. We are so grateful for our partnership with Spotted Owl Healthcare Organization and love to see the great work they are doing in our state!

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, an observance intended to raise awareness of viral hepatitis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Thousands of people in WV are living with viral hepatitis putting them at risk for serious and potentially fatal health problems including liver cancer. Mountains of Hope is proud to have co-sponsored and participated in West Virginia's Inaugural Colorectal Cancer Roundtable meeting yesterday in Summersville, WV. Stakeholders from across the state came together to create a plan to better prevent, detect, and treat colorectal cancer in West Virginia. A special thanks to Colon Cancer Coalition, American Cancer Society, and WV Program to Increase Colorectal Cancer Screening for their partnership!

The newest guidelines recommend colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 45. The recommended age was lowered from 50 to 45 because colorectal cancer is on the rise among young and middle-age adults. Talk with your healthcare provider about your screening options.
