- Exercise extra caution at intersections.

AUTUMN DRIVING HAZARDS & TIPS TO STAY SAFE

Autumn is one of the prettiest times of the year but presents a distinct set of challenges for drivers. Here are some critical hazards associated with autumn driving and tips to help navigate them safely:https://messerfinancial.com/website/p&c/2024_Autumn_Driving_Hazards.pdf

America's roads are getting more dangerous! In a recent survey, 70% of U.S. drivers witnessed some form of road rage during the past year, up from 57% in early 2022, with road rage shootings more than doubling.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers the following advice for dealing with dangerously aggressive drivers:
• If you are in the left lane and someone wants to pass, move over and let them by.
• Give speeding drivers plenty of space. Speeding drivers may lose control of their vehicles more easily.
• Adjust your driving accordingly. Speeding is tied to aggressive driving. If a speeding driver is tailgating you or trying to engage you in risky driving, use judgment to steer your vehicle out of the way safely.
• Call the police if you believe a driver is following or harassing you.

When Mindy and Dawn dropped by for a visit at the chamber offices, I asked them if they were such great friends and business partners prior to joining the chamber. They both said no. We met through our chamber membership and getting involved with the chamber.

Summer vacations are ending, and school years are starting back across the country. Expect roadways to become a little more congested in morning and evening commutes. You backed up too quickly and hit into the car parked behind you. You don’t see any witnesses and the damage to the other car doesn’t look that bad. Although it can be tempting to drive away, DON’T DO IT! Leaving the scene of even a minor accident can result in fines, criminal penalties, and the loss of your licenses.

If you can’t find the owner, you must leave a note on the car before you leave the scene. Provide the following details:

- Your name
- Your contact information
- Your auto insurance policy information
- An explanation of what happened

You can now legally leave the area, and the owner can choose to contact you if they want compensation for the damage.

Please remember that laws regarding hit & runs can vary from state to state. In some states, like California and New York, you also have to report the accident to the police as soon as possible. Just be safe and do it immediately.
