MCCC book place in semi-finals

MCCC booked their place in the semi-finals of the CCL 2021 T20 competition with an exciting four-run victory over HPCC on Sunday at the Hobson Cricket Ground in Climax. In the tightly fought quarter-final MCCC were dismissed for 134 in their allotted 20 overs while the home team replied with 130 in 19.5.

After being asked to bat first under cool autumn conditions, MCCC were indebted to a solid innings of 43 by Nadeem Sajid for their eventual score. Nadeem’s innings, which came off 32 deliveries and included three fours and two sixes, proved to be the backbone for MCCC as the home team’s bowlers kept a tight rein on proceedings. Four run outs, including that of Nadeem, did not help MCCC’s cause and the next best score was 24 by Faisal Kashmiri – an innings consisting of two fours and a six from 22 balls. The other batters to reach double figures were Karthik Reddy Bora (16) and skipper Naqash Choudhery (13). For HPCC, Rizwan Bahadur claimed two wickets for 24 runs, and Ehtesham Arshad two for 26.

MCCC struck swiftly when HPCC began their reply with Walton Chase removing Eibaad Butt with the first legitimate delivery of the innings. The other opener Jehangir Khan also received a first ball from Yaser Warrich while Ghias Rehman became the third batsman dismissed for a duck as HPCC slipped to 25 for three. Nadeem, who sent back Rehman also dismissed Abdullah Shah for an 11-ball 26 (three fours, two sixes) at 39 for four as MCCC seemed ready to take control. However, Zain Afzal had other plans! Although he kept losing partners at regular intervals the left-hander kept his team in the game with a 47-ball 59 which included four fours and two sixes. He carried HPCC into the final over with eight runs required and the advantage firmly with the batting team. Then up stepped Awais Khan! Awais, who dropped Afzal before he reached double figures turned out be the hero for MCCC, shattering the left-hander’s stumps with the second delivery of the over. The remaining runs proved too much for the last pair and a mix-up resulted in a run out off of the fifth delivery and MCCC were in the semis!

Nadeem completed a fine al-round performance with three wickets for 30 from his four overs while Warrich claimed two for 17 from four. There was also a wicket each for Awais, Karthik, Naqash and Charles.

MCCC will travel to Greenville, South Carolina, for Saturday’s semi-final against GGCC who beat CLCC in their quarter-final. The game starts at 1.30 p.m.

MCCC sweep double-header to finish third in Group B

MCCC won both of their matches on Saturday to finish third in Group B and seventh overall as the CCL T20 2021 competition continued last weekend with the final preliminary games. In matches played at Robert L. Smith Park, MCCC first breezed past CL by 10 wickets then beat the powerful CLCC by 24 runs in the afternoon.

The morning victory was formalized by some devastating hitting from Karthik Reddy Bora and Faisal Kashmiri, who both scored unbeaten half-centuries, after Harris Khan had captured four wickets to restrict CL to 135 for eight from their quota of 20 overs. Karthik’s 72 included nine fours and three sixes from 38 balls, while Kashmiri’s 56 came from 27 balls with three fours and four sixes. The pair rushed MCCC to 138 without loss in 10.5 overs!

Earlier, after MCCC won the toss and choose to field first, Harris’s four for 17 from his four overs was supported by Nadeem Sajid who had two for 27. For CL, Vivek Sreenivasan hit 48 and Mohammed Thouhid 38. The pair added 90 for the fourth wicket after Harris had claimed the first three wickets by the time the score reached 16.

In the afternoon game it was the turn of Awais Khan and skipper Naqash Choudhery’s to play hero. The pair hit half-centuries as MCCC amassed 196 for four after being asked to bat first. CLCC replied with 172 in 19.3 overs to suffer their second loss of the tournament. Awais smashed his way to an unbeaten 80 which came from 30 balls and included five fours and seven sixes. His captain counted four fours and two sixes in a 34-ball 52 as they accelerated the MCCC scoring after a slow start. MCCC were 58 for three in the 11th over when they joined forces in a fourth wicket stand of 77 from 37 deliveries. After Naqash departed at 135 Awais added another 59 from 20 balls with Qaisar Mehmood who remained not out on 19 with two fours and six. Kashmiri also contributed 20 at the top of the order.

CLCC were off to a blazing start in their chase, with Kirtan Patel slamming seven fours and a six in a 20-ball 45. He and fellow opener Ravi Rajput were both bowled by Walton Charles however going for big shots. Kalpesh Mistry then hit the topscore of 57, from 36 balls with four fours and three sixes, but the task proved too much for the rest of the CLCC line-up. Charles ended with two for 33, while Shibraz Sheik had two for 15, Mehmood two for 20, Karthik two for 25 and Naqash one for 31.

The seventh placed finish means MCCC will take on arch-rivals CUCC in the pre-quarter-finals Saturday at Robert Smith.

MCCC split results again

MCCC once again split the results in their latest two matches of the CCL T20 last Sunday at the Kilborn Park in Charlotte. In the first game of the doubleheader MCCC lost by seven wickets to CTCC while in the afternoon encounter they won by 50 runs over CBCC. Against CTCC, MCCC were bowled out for 122 in 19.1 overs to which the home team replied with 123 for three in 12.3 overs. In the second game MCCC accumulated 156 for nine in 20 overs and bowled out CBCC for 106 in 17.5.

The morning game saw MCCC struggling throughout their innings after they were asked to bat first. They slumped to 69 for eight before a blistering unbeaten 41 by Kashif Hassnain helped them over the 100 mark and to their eventual modest total. His innings came from a mere 19 deliveries and included four sixes and two fours, but the next best score was 19, which came from Qaisar Mehmood. Faisal Kashmiri also contributed 17 and Kashif Ehsan 10. For CTCC, Arunan Manickavelu claimed three wickets for 22 runs, while Zeeshad Saeed took two for 31 and Ashok Singh two for 37.

Sunil Patel then slammed a 36-ball unbeaten 82 with eight fours and five sixes as CTCC reached their target with more than seven overs to spare. Shreyas Vakil also contributed 22 while for MCCC there was a wicket each for Karthik Reddy Bora, Harris Khan and Mehmood.

The second game of the day saw Karthik batting steadily for a top-score of 63, which came from 48 balls and included one six and nine fours. This was after MCCC won the toss and decided to bat first. He was supported by Nadeem Khan who made 33 in a third wicket stand of 66. Awais Khan also slammed 22 from nine with three sixes and a four as MCCC posted a competitive score this time around. Ketal Patel was CBCC’s best bowler with three wickets for 32 runs.

In CBCC’s reply, which saw them collapsing from 97 for five to 106 all out, Murali Murali was their best batter with 45 from 46 balls. He struck four fours and a six but his only support was scores of 14 and 13 from Bhumil Patel and Robin Booswamy respectively. For MCCC, skipper Naqash Choudhery claimed four wickets for 11 runs, and there were two wickets each for Yaser Warrich and Walton Charles.

MCCC will be in action again on Saturday in another double-header. They take on CL 9.30 a.m. and CLCC at 1.30 p.m. Both matches are slated for the Robert L. Smith Park.

MCCC suffer mixed fortunes in CCL T20

MCCC suffered mixed fortunes as the CCL 2021 T20 season continued over the past two weekends in Charlotte. After scoring a tense three-wicket victory over CUCC on October 3 at the Robert Smith Park, MCCC went down by two runs in another close encounter one week later on October 10 at Kilborne.

At Robert Smith, CUCC made 154 for six from their quota of 20 overs to which MCCC replied with 155 for seven in 19.1. At Kilborne, SPCC amassed 177 for six in 20 and MCCC reached 175 for seven in reply.

Kilborne’s game turned out to be a thriller after MCCC were reduced to 133 for seven from 17.3 overs. With 45 needed from 15 deliveries, the SPCC boys must have felt it was a formality until Qaisar Mehmood decided it was not. The veteran blasted his way to an unbeaten 38 from 14 balls, with five sixes and one four as he almost pulled off an improbable victory. His team needed 18 from the last over but although he hit two massive sixes they could only manager 15 to suffer their first loss of the tournament.

Earlier, opener Faisal Kashmiri hit the topscore of 61 which came from 40 balls and included five sixes and two fours. He and Karthik Reddy Bora (23 from 20) posted 52 for the first wicket. Awais Khan also contributed 23 from 11, with three sixes, before Mehmood arrived to set the ground on fire with his heroic display. For SPCC, Rupesh Raut and Sivaraman Arunachalam claimed two wickets each. In the SPCC innings, after they won the toss and decided to bat, Raut also led the way with a 22-ball 41 while Mohan Nallapareddy hit 36 from 15 and EJ Karthik 28. MCCC’s best bowling came from Nadeem Khan who had two for 36. There was also a wicket each for Karthik, Anas Choudhery, Walton Charles and Mehmood.

Over at Robert Smith, CUCC choose to bat first and arrived at their total mainly through contributions of 38 from Jigar Desai, 35 not out from Azhar Mohammed and 26 from Gundeep Singh. There was a wicket each for Mehmood, Karthik and Nadeem. In the MCCC innings, Karthik led the way with 48 while skipper Naqash Choudhery made 44. The pair added 73 for the fourth wicket after MCCC were reduced to 26 for three in the sixth over. Nadeem also contributed 19 towards the end of the innings. Khurram Ishaq claimed two wickets for CUCC.

MCCC will be in action again on Sunday at Kilborn when they take on CTCC at 9.30 a.m. and CBCC at 1.30 p.m.

MCCC win second game in T20 league

MCCC made it two out of two when they won their second game of the CCL 2021 T20 tournament last Sunday at the Kilborn Park in Charlotte. The feat was achieved against home team CL who they beat by the comfortable margin of six wickets. Scores in the match were: CL 150 for 9 in 20 overs; MCCC 151 for 4 in 17.5.

The visitors’ win was set up by Shibraz Sheik who claimed four wickets for 14 runs as CL collapsed towards the end of their innings; and Karthik Reddy Bora and skipper Naqash Choudhery who hit 52 and 47 respectively in the victory chase.

Shibraz’s haul came in the middle of the CL collapse after MCCC won the toss and choose to field. CL, on the back of Prasant Shinde’s 83, were 145 for four in the 19th over before Awais Khan ran out Hemant Kharpude for five. Two more run outs followed in the final over where Shibraz also claimed two as CL’s innings sputtered to a close. They lost five wickets for five runs from seven balls. Shinde, who started slow, struck seven sixes and one four from 51 balls before falling to Shibraz. The next best score was Mohammed Thouhid’s 23 which came as part of a third wicket partnership of 53 with Shinde. Apart from Shibraz, there was a wicket each for Walton Charles and Karthik.

Karthik, in his first game for MCCC, then hit four fours and two sixes from 40 balls while adding 86 for the third wicket with Naqash. The captain slammed three sixes and two fours from 36 deliveries before making way for Awais who closed the deal with a 14-ball unbeaten 25 which included three fours and one six. For CL, Deepak and Sunny Sou claimed two wickets each for 26 and 38 runs respectively.

MCCC’s next game will be against CUCC on Sunday at the Robert L. Smith Park in Charlotte.

Naqash stars as MCCC win T20 opening game

Skipper Naqash Choudhery grabbed five wickets, including a hat-trick, as MCCC made a winning start to the CCL 2021 T20 season last Saturday at the Robert L. Smith Park in Charlotte. Naqash’s exploits, and an unbeaten half-century by Faisal Kashmiri led, ensured the home team completed an easy seven-wicket win over JCC.

Bowling off-spin, Man-of-the-Match Naqash claimed five for 16 from his quota of four overs as JCC – after being asked to bat first – were dismissed for 99 from 17.3 of their 20 overs. Opener Kashmiri then slammed a 42-ball 76 not out to lead MCCC to 102 for three in 11.4.

Naqash, who claimed a wicket in his first over and the hat-trick in his second, helped reduce JCC to 68 for nine before 10th wicket stand of 31 (the best of the innings) carried the visitors to their eventual score. The partnership was between Vikram Chetkuri (18 not out) and Kasi Gorla (10). The only other batsman to reach double figures was Phani Reddy Phani who topscored with 33. Apart from Naqash there was a wicket each for Yaser Warrich, Anas Choudhery and Awais Khan.

When MCCC replied such was Kashmiri’s dominance, while striking five fours and seven sixes, that the next best score was nine by Nadeem Khan. Naqash also made five and Warrich four. Kashmiri also struck the only boundaries in the innings. Vipul Sharma claimed two wickets for 14 runs for JCC.

MCCC bows out of CCL

MCCC are out of the 2021 CCL Division 2. The league champions were eliminated in the first round of the knock-out leg by eight-seeded WTCC last Sunday at the Robert L. Smith Park in Charlotte. In the low-scoring quarter-final WTCC accumulated 158 for seven in their 30 overs; the home team could only muster 151 in 28 overs to go down by seven runs.

Overnight rain, resulting in a damp pitch and heavy outfield, influenced MCCC’s decision to field first after winning the toss – a choice that looked to be the correct one as WTCC’s innings struggled to get out of first gear. Yaser Warrich, MCCC’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament, continued his fine form by striking twice in his second over to reduce the visitors to 17 for two. He struck again at 30 for three before Rauf Shah (53) and Bilal Aslam (13) mounted a recovery. Shah was the backbone of innings, facing 69 balls while striking fours, but it was left to Usman Ghani with a 44-ball 43 to give the team some impetus towards the end. Ali Tariq also contributed 21 from 10 balls. Warrich, who ended the tournament with 22 wickets, picked up four for 21 from his six overs while there was a wicket each for Nadeem Khan, Naqash Choudhery and Shibraz Sheik. Qaiser Mehmood, who finished with 20 victims, went wicket-less on Sunday.

MCCC were off to a solid start in their quest for victory, with Faisal Kashmiri and Hamza Akmal posting 29 in four overs. However, with Akmal’s dismissal the WTCC bowlers slowly began to take control with wickets falling at regular intervals. The lone beacon was Kashmiri who fought for 50 deliveries for his 49 before he was seventh out with the score at 103. Mehmood followed soon after at 105 and MCCC were eight down with 10 overs remaining and 54 runs to get.

At that stage it looked like WTCC were on their way to an easy victory. However, Warrich (30 from 36) and wicket-keeper Donovan Matthews had other ideas. Through a combination of sensible batting and running they slowly turned the game back in their favour. Helped by a number of wides and misfields by under pressure fielders, the pair added 45 for the ninth wicket to see their team within nine runs of a semi-final spot. That spot was not to be however, as Warrich after striking Junaid for a six was caught on the long-on boundary as he attempted to repeat the shot. As the disappointed batsman departed the visitors were elated as they knew they were back in the game. They were right! Two deliveries later last man Anas Choudhery was bowled by Junaid and the WTCC could not contain their delight at knocking the favourites out of the competition with two overs to spare. Matthews was left unbeaten on 11 and MCCC were left to rue what could have been.

For WTCC there were three wickets each for Junaid Tariq and Awais Ahmad, and two each for Bilal Aslam and Bilal Zafar.
