From The Beginning...
I never saw myself in the kitchen, other than cooking meals and that’s been since the age of 15. Ungrad was spent at WSSU, I was an exercise science major. I had dreams of being the second head female athletic trainer in the NBA. Wanting to travel the world, come back home to Charlotte and work for the then, Bobcats..walking to work since the plan was to move uptown. They say if you want to make God laugh...tell him your plan. And that’s exactly what I did.
I found out while being a student athletic trainer that I was pregnant with my son, having less than two years left in ungrad since my program had been extended to 5 years instead of the “normal four.” I was placed in a position of not being able to do much, just tape wrists and ankles, I couldn't even lift water bottles. I was the fragile one, and eventually understood. I was really having a baby after much thought, weighing of my options, and many nights of crying. Being that my family and doctor were back in Charlotte, I decided to move back since essentially, that’s where my village was. It was difficult to make the change, I didn't want to leave but when the wind direction changes--sometimes so do you. WSSU taught me about myself. I can never be more thankful.
My son was born May 20, 2007, surrounded by love and a very exhausted new mama. It was the best day of my life. He was really here. Life changed in a matter of 17 hours. I left home in labor as one and came back as two. His godfather, Juan Joseph became one of my most treasured friends, meeting while at WSSU. The first year of my son’s life flew by. I blinked and he went from a newborn to walking. So much had changed, people came and went, friends and family became distant. On a cool winter evening in October 2008, my son’s godfather was murdered. He was always my push when in doubt. He encouraged me to keep my brain sharp while home with a newborn and attend online classes. To deal with the grief of his untimely passing, I started to cook more...and more...and one day, I wanted a pound cake. Thus..the Everythang Pound Cake was born. It’s as if, I had found my light, my kick, my thing. Pound cakes were being made about every three days, it was crazy. I looked into cake decorating classes and settled on taking a Wilton class, and took two. I decided to shoot for the stars..JE Cakes was born. JE, my son’s godfather’s full name was Juan Emerson Joseph. I eventually added food, JE Cakes & Catering was born.
I have been on quite the ride the last few years, making cakes for R.Kelly and several local celebrities; meeting up and coming comedian Ryan Davis and the ultimate Charlotte legend, Eddie Owens. I have since graduated from CPCC with my Baking & Pastry Arts Degree. If you’re going to do it-educate yourself, right? It’s only up from here, and I’m blessed to be here.
