Mental Health Counseling
Take some time to REST!!!
Today is . Let's take the day to check in on our mental health and our loved ones. Together we can eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health & mental illness.
NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. For many, home is a place of love, warmth, and comfort. It’s somewhere that you know you will be surrounded by care and support, and a nice little break from the busyness of the real world. But for millions of others, home is anything but a sanctuary. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of physical violence by a partner every year.
Every 9 seconds, a woman in the U.S. is beaten or assaulted by a current or ex-significant other.
1 in 4 men are victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.
Since it is Sunday....

Let's talk about ANXIETY!
We all experience anxiety. For example, speaking in front of a group can make us anxious, but that anxiety also motivates us to prepare and practice. Driving in heavy traffic is another common source of anxiety, but it helps keep us alert and cautious to avoid accidents. However, when feelings of intense fear and distress become overwhelming and prevent us from doing everyday activities, an anxiety disorder may be the cause.
Anxiety disorders are a group of related conditions, each having unique symptoms. However, all anxiety disorders have one thing in common: persistent, excessive fear or worry in situations that are not threatening.
The most common types of anxiety disorders include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorders and Phobias.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This month I will attempt to highlight some important facts as it relates to mental health and why individuals need to seek therapy at some point in their lives.
Contrary to popular misconception, you don’t have to be “crazy,” desperate, or on the brink of a meltdown to go to therapy. At the same time, therapy isn’t usually necessary for every little struggle life throws your way, especially if you have a strong support system of friends and family. So how do you know when it’s time to see a therapist?
Most people can benefit from therapy at least some point in their lives. Sometimes the signs are obvious—but at other times, something may feel slightly off and you can’t figure out what it is. So you trudge on, trying to sustain your busy life until it sets in that life has become unmanageable.
So WHY therapy... I'm glad you asked!
1. Feeling sad, angry, or otherwise “not yourself.”
2. Abusing drugs, alcohol, food, or s*x to cope.
3. You’ve lost someone or something important to you.
4. Something traumatic has happened.
5. You can’t do the things you like to do.
You may have great insight into your own patterns and problems. You may even have many of the skills to manage them on your own. Still, there may be times when you need help—and the sooner you get it, the faster you can get back to enjoying life.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and as I usually try to do every year, I will be providing various posts to bring awareness. Men, women and children can be affected by domestic abuse and for many, it goes unreported.
With intimate partner violence, it's more about Power and Control. This graph depicts the various areas where someone can be in an abusive relationship.
If you or someone you know is an abusive relationship, GET HELP FROM A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL (will say more on this later).

Seasonal affective disorder* is a form of depression also known as SAD, seasonal depression or winter depression. People with SAD experience mood changes and symptoms similar to depression. About 5 percent of adults in the U.S. experience SAD and it typically lasts about 40 percent of the year. It is more common among women than men.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Common symptoms of SAD include fatigue, even with too much sleep, and weight gain associated with overeating and carbohydrate cravings. SAD symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include many symptoms similar to major depression, such as:
Feeling of sadness or depressed mood
Marked loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
Changes in appetite; usually eating more, craving carbohydrates
Change in sleep; usually sleeping too much
Loss of energy or increased fatigue despite increased sleep hours
Increase in restless activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech
Feeling worthless or guilty
Trouble concentrating or making decisions
Thoughts of death or su***de or attempts at su***de
If you feel you have symptoms of SAD, seek the help of a trained medical professional. Just as with other forms of depression, it is important to make sure there is no other medical condition causing symptoms. SAD can be misdiagnosed as hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, infectious mononucleosis, and other viral infections, so proper evaluation is key. A mental health professional can diagnose the condition and discuss therapy options. With the right treatment, SAD can be a manageable condition.
