Arthritis Services...what we do in OUR Community matters
Did you know that Arthritis Services has been around since 1977 teaching and providing on-going opportunities for persons with arthritis and chronic health conditions to learn self-management tips/techniques that advance persons from merely ‘living with,’ to ‘LIVING WELL’ despite these health challenges?!
Did you know that Arthritis Services taught 535 self-help classes in 25 communities from July 2017 to June 2018 right here in Mecklenburg County? 82% of the participants surveyed indicated that they improved in one or more of the following: pain, activities of daily living, physical fitness, mood, and socialization! 63% (yes that’s right) reported an improvement in their pain level! The Community Arthritis/Chronic Disease Project is an innovative, service-intense, collaborative public health project that takes evidence-based chronic disease self-management services to the people that need them the most! We serve these individuals in the Mecklenburg County hot lunch program. Our service delivery is special because we ‘take our programs on the road,’ providing experiences for persons at close to home, familiar locations to older adults. We use multiple different teaching methods to make learning self-help skills fun! And most important, we don’t just teach the skills and leave-we provide ample practice sessions throughout the year!
