Mirroring and matching in dogs - Hanne Grice Pet Training & Behaviour 12/08/2023

Great article on how mirroring, a form of sub-conscious mimicry, is important for communication with our dogs.

It helps explain why some dogs act so "human" and in some cases act negatively. It helps us train and build bonds with animals.

Give it a read and maybe experiment with your dog. You might be surprised what you find.

Mirroring and matching in dogs - Hanne Grice Pet Training & Behaviour Most people know I’m almost obsessive when it comes to how animals communicate, especially canine and feline body language.  And I’m also hooked on human interactions and body language too; whether that’s understanding how a person recalls an incident by watching their representational system...

I have always struggled with this concept of purely positive as it seems counterintuitive to the way animals learn and live in the natural world. People included. Look at newborn children with no cognitive rational but instincts. They trigger you to do things through aversive and non-aversive feedback. They scream and cry till you feed them or hold them. They throw temper tantrums when they don’t want to wear the shoes you picked out but, smile and are calm when they get what they want, etc. They are teaching you what to do and not to do through the exchange. Pressure is applied until you make the right choice, then you are rewarded for doing so.

This is biologically embedded from birth. Once you and your child build upon your communication strategies, they STILL do things that result in some kind of pressure. Do better in school or you won’t be successful, get a job or you won’t have things you value, be kind or you won’t have friends. If you steal, you can go to jail, if you don’t take care of yourself, you can get sick. Many times, these things are done despite knowing the “better” way until they must reap the consequences, then they magically don’t do it again because there is context or reason why the other choice WAS better. To assume an emotional and thinking being (that includes dogs) could not make those choices or act out on instinct is a discredit to them.

For dogs, most of their mistakes may come with dire consequences unknown to them. They sn**ch something off the counter that could poison them, they nip or mouth the wrong person while learning to play appropriately and they get put down from a city ordinance. The dog jumps on a house guest, knocking the person over and gets rehomed because they are too excitable. Dogs rarely have a chance in our world to make a mistake. Its our job as their owners to ensure they don’t choose poorly, or they will suffer the repercussions of your inability to rectify.

A little about Brandy:
I grew up in family that rehabilitated and trained dogs. My grandmother was a Police K9 Handler, my mother was active in Dog Shows and Schutzhund dogs while working in a n animal shelter. This truly sparked my passion with animals. I had the unique advantage of assisting my mother in her multiple endeavors and have never stopped. I have been training/rehabilitating shelter dogs/rescues since I was 13yrs of age. Working with dogs from all backgrounds, all breeds, and all issues from fear to aggression, from over stimulated to zero stimulation.

After developing a love for dobermans, I became an integral part of the local breed rescue as a professional behavioral evaluator and consultant for going on 7yrs. Due to my interactions with various medical cases along the way, I have been fortunate to have garnered tons of experience in medical rehabilitation and consulting in nutrition, exercise and basic health.

My passions and love for everything dog, drove me to pursue titling in AKC and Schutzhund/IPO/IGP. I also find myself always trying and learning new techniques and styles from all disciplines from lure coursing, agility, carting, barn hunt, earthdog, flyball, dock diving, to hunting dogs,Search and Rescue, and everything in between and beyond. My day to day and life is centered around my dogs. I love sharing my knowledge with others and learning new things.

My Training Styles:

I never use one method as I think every dog and handler are unique. The handler's comfort level, physical abilities, and temperament are just as important factors as the dogs'. I work towards the handler's goals and will adjust techniques as we learn what works best for both. My tool box is huge so I welcome challenges. If its something I have never seen then I do my research and work conservatively. I also like to really find the true causes for the behaviors from both Handler and dog to resolve them at the root cause then treat the symptoms. I have spent many hours researching and learning theory from modern psychology and other trainers. I am open to any tool that helps promote a healthy, safe and mutually benefiting relationship between dog and handler.
