Council for Children's Rights serves children in Mecklenburg County through individual advocacy and legal representation.
Our Vision: Council for Children’s Rights envisions a community committed to standing up, speaking out, and acting to ensure every child’s right to be safe, healthy, and well-educated. We focus in the areas of child welfare, delinquency, mental health, special education, and custody. Additionally, through research and policy work, we seek to make lasting, system-wide change across our entire community.
Looking for an easy way to get involved with the Council? Now’s your chance! Our Children’s Defense Team is looking for book donations to provide to children currently in detention.
Reading provides so many benefits to children including stress reduction, improved focus, and brand new worlds to explore. Great books can inspire us and provide hope!
Our clients in detention are eager to read and socialize with their friends about their favorite books - even forming their own book clubs - but limited access creates just another barrier for them. Let’s change that- Our team has worked with these children to create a wishlist full of books and now, we need your support!
Check out our ThriftBooks wishlist here: https://www.thriftbooks.com/list/share/2c8245110d14c5d4/
Books purchased from our online wishlist will be shipped to our office and distributed to our child-clients! Looking for other ways to help? Contact Michelle Duprey, our Children’s Defense Team Director, at [email protected].
Our team had a great time visiting Promising Pages for some morning book shopping! All books will be donated directly to children in detention. 📚
Promising Pages is a local nonprofit that collects book donations & distributes these to students, families, & organizations, including CFCR, in our community! Thank you to the team of staff and volunteers at Promising Pages for your support! 🌟

When health needs are addressed, the state of an individual’s mental health may not always be taken into account. CFCR takes a holistic approach, addressing the social and mental health needs of our child-clients in addition to their physical health, housing, educational, and family needs.
We understand that and advocate for long-term planning after children are released from treatment. Our advocacy addresses the underlying causes of trauma, as well as uncovering unmet needs. 🧠💙

At Council for Children’s Rights, we challenge the system and cultivate change that will improve the lives of historically marginalized groups. The children and families we serve have often faced discrimination based upon their race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disabilities.
Our Research and Policy Program releases publications, including the Juvenile Justice Report and the State of Our Children, to bring light to these systemic injustices.

Juneteenth marks the day that the last enslaved African Americans finally learned that they were free- over two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
While today is a day to celebrate freedom and resilience, it is also a solemn reminder that for Black Americans, justice is too often delayed.
Children of color disproportionately face barriers to resources and opportunities due to discriminatory practices within our society and systems. Implicit biases are embedded in our legal, criminal, and education systems.
Within our own community, there are thousands of children each year that need someone to stand up for them and protect their rights. When our children’s lives intersect with the juvenile justice system, they should be treated with respect and provided holistic support to address the root cause of the issues.
This , join us in celebrating the resilience of Black Americans, while also joining us in our fight towards equitable opportunity for children of color- from the courtroom, to the classroom, to our everyday lives.
Please note: Our office will be closed today (6/19) in observance of this holiday.
What is our “why?”
Our “why” is:
📢 Giving children a voice when they often feel silenced
💙 Helping repair families, starting with children first
🏛️ Serving as a model of how children should be supported when their lives intersect with the juvenile justice system
🌎 Fighting for all children’s rights to a safe and healthy future filled with opportunity
By supporting our children, we are supporting the future of our community at-large. With your support, there is no limit to the good we can do together. 🤩
