C4K combines mentoring and technology to prepare youth for brighter futures. #Mentoring #Youth #Charlottesville #Community #YouthVoice #STEM
C4K's free out-of-school time design studio is where technology meets imagination to bring young people's ideas to life.
The Clubhouse has been closed this week as we prepare for the start of a new cycle of mentoring. Sure, we got tons of work done, but we miss the bright smiles and contagious energy of our members and mentors alike. Looking forward to the coming weeks of discovery and co-learning at the Clubhouse!
Huge thanks to University of Virginia School of Medicine for sending 1st year students to our Clubhouse today for their annual Day of Service! They helped us test out a ton of activities, making sure the instructions were accurate and easy for our members to follow. The field of medicine is gaining compassionate and collaborative practitioners - who also know how to have fun!

While the Clubhouse buzzes with activity today in preparation for our summer Collab Showcase - we're reminded of how surprised visitors often are at the huge scope of the innovative projects members tackle here. ("Wow - I never expected t-shirt design to be something you'd do at C4K!" ) Find out how we incorporate the arts into STEAM exploration in our latest blog article - and how our members benefit from our comprehensive approach.

Turning up the heat on STEM: C4K innovates with STEAM power • C4K What’s in a single letter? When it comes to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) versus STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math), it turns out there’s a world of difference. Why include the arts in STEM mentoring? The term STEM started to gain popularity around 2001 when th...

🌟The Clubhouse is in overdrive this week! Find out how one of our members has a plan to turn up the tech for our showcase on Friday.
At C4K, we love seeing how our members build skills that apply to their lives beyond the Clubhouse. During multi-week projects using tools like animation software, 3D printers, audio production equipment, and much more, teens gain the technical know-how, planning skills, problem-solving strategies, communication skills, and resilience to bounce back and recalibrate when things don't go smoothly. Imagine the ways in which those abilities are useful in school and on the job!

UVA, C4K Team Up to Make Data Science ‘Accessible’ to Local Students — School of Data Science For a group of middle schoolers in Charlottesville this summer, data science wasn’t just a subject to be studied — it was one to be experienced.
We're so grateful to our partners at WillowTree for providing a fun field trip opportunity to our members who completed our App Journey Camp last week. At the Clubhouse, members devised a way to poll WillowTree staff for the snack they preferred, using an app they customized for the purpose. They created graphics, launched the app, interpreted the data, and presented at WillowTree - all in a single week!

Super productive Wednesday and Thursday in the Clubhouse! Our members have been learning how to build an app - and interpret and display the data they're getting in. Today, they present their findings in person to our partners at WillowTree. Members practiced their talking points and they are ready for the spotlight!
It's a busy week at C4K as our Build an App camp is in full swing. Take a peek behind the scenes as our members prepare to build an app for our partners at WillowTree to help their staff vote on what they want to see in their snack offerings. First, our 3 groups had to create an ad that made their snack look irresistible. Each member group challenged themselves to showcase their snack using food styling techniques like overstuffing the bag, displaying food on a serving plate, and spraying glue to make the snacks look glossy in their photographs. Today, they program their app, troubleshoot, and get ready to send it out - and look for votes to roll in. This is what super-engaging STEAM projects look like!
Check out the tech exploration happening at the C4K Clubhouse! In partnership with Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents - PHAR, The Presidential Precinct and Mandela Washington Fellowship, we opened our doors to visiting scholars and neighborhood families Saturday. It's never too early to learn STEAM skills!

And special thanks to Julius' mentor, Tim, who encouraged and supported him throughout the process.

Kala Somerville, C4K Director, and Tricia Howell (former C4K employee) attended Piedmont Virginia Community College's Commencement ceremony last night. They were inspired to hear graduating students share their journeys and the invaluable support they received at PVCC. A big shoutout to PVCC for fostering a strong network of support that empowers ALL students to succeed!
At C4K, we understand the importance of building a strong support system early on. That's why we equip our youth members with the tools and resources to develop their webs of support, setting them on a path to thrive not just in high school, but throughout their educational journey, including colleges like PVCC!
Thank you to the amazing PVCC graduates for sharing their stories. Their journeys leave us feeling hopeful for the future!
And congrats to all of the PVCC graduates--especially our C4K alum!
Congratulations to The Front Porch for a great opening night of the Rivanna Roots Concert Series on Saturday night! Special shout-out and thanks to Koda from the show's headliner, Chamomile and Whiskey, for taking the time to be a guest on Julius' podcasting project earlier this year.
In just ten weeks, C4K members, with the support of their mentors, planned, pitched, and presented their very own STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) projects.
