Roger Ritchey admitted to our Altoona, Pennsylvania rehabilitation hospital after a month-long hospital stay. Prior to his illness, Roger was independent with walking and performing everyday tasks. His illness and extended hospital stay took its toll, though. He needed assistance to complete even the simplest of tasks when he came to us.
Roger was determined to work hard in therapy. His goal was to get back home with his wife of 49 years. With his hard work and our team of dedicated nurses, doctors and therapists, he was able to have an amazing recovery and do just that!

A grand opening was held on June 24 for Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. The 40-bed hospital is a joint venture between Encompass Health and Baptist Health. It is now open to patients!
“We are excited to celebrate the opening of our joint venture hospital with Baptist Health, with the unified goal of providing high-quality patient care to patients of the Louisville community,” said Troy Dedecker, president of Encompass Health’s Central region. “With our patients at the forefront of our minds, we have designed the hospital to accommodate all of their needs as they regain strength, function, hope and independence. The hospital’s one-story building design provides patients with greater accessibility as they are transferred to different treatment and non-treatment areas of the hospital, and more convenient access for families and visitors.”

Jessica was admitted to our Fitchburg, Wisconsin rehabilitation hospital with debilitating back pain that left her unable to walk. Prior to admission, she was very active in the community and was walking four miles a day. Jessica's goal is to return home, get back to work and walk four miles a day again. She is already doing an amazing job with dancing!

Roy, an Army veteran, was admitted to our rehabilitation hospital in northwest Tucson, Arizona after a stroke which greatly impacted his ability to communicate. While at our hospital, he worked diligently on his speech and cognition. Jamie—our speech language pathologist—and others helped him with reading, speaking and identifying images by putting them into words. “He is tenacious and does not give up,” said his partner Barbara.

Meet Miguel, an inspirational patient at our Altamonte Springs, Florida rehabilitation hospital. At 41 years old, he had a surfing accident injuring his head and spinal cord. He received surgery. When Miguel admitted to our rehabilitation hospital, he could not walk and didn't have full range of motion in his upper extremities. Despite these challenges, Miguel and our dedicated team of therapists worked tirelessly to help him recover. We are proud to share his remarkable progress: He's now walking, has full range of motion in his upper body and was able to safely return home to his family and two cherished pups. Stephanie was admitted to our Morgantown, West Virginia rehabilitation hospital recovering from Guillain-Barré, a rare condition that causes paralysis. Upon arrival, she needed a mechanical lift for transfers. Hand weakness made it difficult for her to feed herself, and she required assistance completing daily tasks.
As a result of the intensive therapy she received during her stay, her strength significantly increased. Stephanie can now manipulate small objects with her hands, get herself dressed and get on and off the floor to play with her kids. She even walked out of our hospital on her own! First stop—ringing our graduation bell!

Following a stroke, Donald Plants was admitted to UVA Encompass Health requiring significant assistance with mobility, activities of daily living and cognition. After suffering from severe pneumonia and given less than a 10% chance of surviving, Kristen Williams was admitted to our Mesa, Arizona rehabilitation hospital. She has made great progress during her stay. Her care team has helped her to reset each day to focus on her goals. Kristen recently walked her longest distance yet, right into the arms of her husband. There was not a dry eye in the hallway. "This was the best birthday present I could have, you alive and walking," her husband said to her. Kristen wants to thank her amazing care team, especially her therapists, for pushing her but also knowing her limits. She said she would recommend Encompass Health to anyone needing rehabilitation.

At 34-years-old, Danielle Easley, a single mom of three, had a stroke. She was told by her medical team at the hospital that she would never walk, talk or be able to take care of herself again. Upon arrival at our rehabilitation hospital in Parkersburg, West Virginia, she couldn't do any of those things. She required a Hoyer lift to get out of bed and could not complete a simple task such as scratching her nose. With dedication and hard work, Danielle beat the odds.
She never gave up and pushed herself beyond measure. Danielle was known by everyone at our hospital, even other patients. She was an inspiration to us all and the definition of success. At discharge, she proudly walked out of the hospital with a walker.

After a spinal cord injury left her unable to walk, Calli's No. 1 goal was to walk out of our hospital. Our staff went straight to work utilizing nearly all the advanced equipment and technologies Encompass Health has to offer. Incorporating high intensity gait training assisted by our team of dedicated therapists, Calli was able to advance from using a walker with the assistance of two therapists to walking independently with forearm crutches within a few weeks.
Calli's progress is a testament to her perseverance combined with our hard-working staff and amazing technology we provide our patients.

Lisa was hit by a truck as she was crossing the street one day after work. She had a traumatic brain injury and was hospitalized for two months. When she came to our rehabilitation hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas, she had a long recovery ahead of her, but our staff met her with encouragement and support.
With the help of physical therapy, Lisa went from not being able to sit up on her own to walking with a walker. Her occupational therapist helped her relearn how to dress herself, and speech therapists helped her with swallowing. With the help of all of those at Encompass Health, Lisa was able to gain confidence in herself after a devastating accident.
Since her discharge, Lisa and her family visit Encompass Health regularly to show their thanks to our staff for their dedication. Lisa is still on the road to recovery, but she is now able to walk on her own with a cane, enjoy regular life with her friends and family and play with her new puppy, Spruce.
