Burgundar, a unique venue for live-action role-play (LARP) enthusiasts, was founded on principles of inclusiveness, respect and empowerment. It has become a central hub for the LARP community, fostering a strong bond that has led to incredible growth.

However, it’s the support from SCORE mentors that has truly set them apart. With help from SCORE, Burgundar’s Board of Directors secured a 10-year property lease, enhanced safety measures and evolved into a cohesive, effective team. These achievements culminated in Burgundar receiving the Successful Innovative Business award at SCORE Maine’s 2024 Success Awards.

Emmi’s Closet is a shining example of turning passion into profit. What began as a hobby for sustainable fashion evolved into a thriving online boutique. However, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. When the pandemic hit, Michelle Nguyen had to pivot quickly, transforming her closet cleanout into a full-fledged business. Yet, a year in, growth stalled, and she realized she needed help. That’s when she turned to SCORE.

Matched with a local mentor, Michelle received guidance on everything from business planning to SEO and financial management. Her mentors encouraged her to think strategically, take calculated risks and believe in her vision. With their support, Michelle doubled her revenue, launched a successful website, won a $10K grant and completed an entrepreneurship program.

“I’ve become a completely different entrepreneur,” Michelle says. “My SCORE mentors gave me the confidence and the tools I needed to succeed.”

When Sasha couldn’t see her dad due to pandemic restrictions in 2020, she turned to technology. “When I saw my dad on the screen, I was profoundly moved to see the isolation and loneliness in his eyes,” she said.

She was determined to create a solution to address this social isolation, so she turned to SCORE for advice. After attending SCORE workshops and being matched with a SCORE mentor, Sasha launched Utopia Experiences. This first-of-its-kind business partners with senior living residences to connect, engage and entertain their residents. They now serve continuing care communities across the nation.

Since she was a teenager, Lori dreamed of owning a store. After working in retail and corporate retail for many years, she was inspired to open her boutique. Getting started was “really scary,” she said.

She enlisted help from SCORE and was matched with her mentor, Steve, who guided her through finding a location and defining her store’s style, product selection and pricing. She named her boutique Vera Doyle, inspired by a 1970s photo of her mom, “to represent women, especially women of color, like my mom.”

Kristopher had a goal. He wanted to officiate sporting events, but the registration fee, training fee and cost of shoes and uniform were more than he could afford. When a friend sent Kristopher a uniform and shoes to help him get started, Kristopher was inspired to create a nonprofit to help others in the same way. Today, Save Our Sports mentors, supports and empowers aspiring sports officials with a wide range of life-changing resources.

With the help of his SCORE mentors, Kristopher has grown his nonprofit and plans to expand into more states across the country.

After a 13-year career as an organic farmer, Hilary decided to embark on a new path and start a business crafting handwoven towels. One of the critical factors that contributed to Hilary’s success was the invaluable support and guidance she received from her SCORE mentor. Jordan was commissioned into the Navy from the US Naval Academy and served on submarines before becoming a Navy JAG. After experiencing the death by su***de of a friend and fellow veteran, Jordan founded a nonprofit that helps veterans break into the culinary industry.

With the help of SCORE, Jordan now owns food trucks nationwide and is the “go-to” for veterans and military spouses seeking to enhance their culinary talents.

As military veterans, Jerad and Andrew felt that their military experience made entrepreneurship more attractive than working for someone else. They started an HVAC business but needed help finding consistency. “We needed some guidance, so we reached out [to SCORE] and never looked back," says Jerad.

At SCORE, each client and the challenges they face are unique. We believe that these entrepreneurs are best served by a diverse volunteer corps.

SCORE mentors come from a variety of backgrounds and offer expertise in different areas of industry. About half currently work as entrepreneurs and executives, and the other half are retired. All are experienced business people with a passion to help small business owners succeed.
