Mill Town Revival continues with Pop-Up Project partnership Collier Construction and The Pop-Up Project have renewed a creative partnership in efforts to revive Mill Town.
A HUGE "thank you!" to Don Armour for taking the time to share his Mill Town story with us! Here is just a bit of it!
Don Armour started working at Standard-Coosa-Thatcher Mill at the age of 18, right out of High School. He started as a "yarn boy" - keeping the women who had to change the bobbins supplied with what they needed. He describes the scene as a "chaotic dance" and talks about how cleaning the bobbins would leave his hands bleeding at the end of the day. He eventually transferred to the supply room, where he ordered the parts and supplies needed for the factory, a job he enjoyed much more!
Though the work was hard, Don has fond memories of his friends at the Mill, many of whom were young men around his age. He says his time at the MIll also taught him a lot about people and hard work, and helped him realize how fortunate he is. For him, the MIll job was a stepping stone to his current career.
ps. If you want to know what a factory was like, Don suggests you watch the movie Norma Rae.
"If These Walls Could Talk"
We were recently given the opportunity, along with The Pop-up Project , to interview Darryl and Orene who both lived in the Mill Town community when it was thriving. Here is a tiny glimpse into their stories.
Ms. Orene is 97 years old and worked at the Mill for 35 years! She raised her 7 children while also working at Mill Town. This super hero mother was the primary breadwinner and caregiver for her children, receiving very little support from her alcoholic husband.
“It was tedious and hard work, but I loved it, in large part because of the community I had there.” - Orene A. Mitchell Driggers
Darryl moved to Mill Town at age 4 in 1942. His brother had polio and they needed to be close to the children's hospital. Both parents as well as two of Darryl’s brothers worked at the Mill. He attended the free day care provided by the company and played on the Standard-Coosa-Thatcher youth baseball team.
“Standard-Coosa-Thatcher were great employers. They took care of their people..... Not many companies like that today." - Darryl McDonald
