The Dahlia Guy Dahlias
Providing quality dahlia tubers and FREE flowers since before the turn of the century.
PROPOSED ACTION: In the past, the rate of washout orders (order requests where the customer does not submit payment) was around 3 percent. This year, the rate exploded to around 20 percent. The typical order takes about 15 minutes to fill and can take even longer when the tubers are not eyed up well. This is a significant amount of wasted time and my arthritic fingers are becoming more of an issue. In addition, I lost a ton of sales opportunities because the tubers that were set aside pending receipt of payment, could not be sold. This is a critical issue the closer one gets to the end of the marketing season. To alleviate this problem in the future, it is my plan to not fill orders until payment is received. If I am out of a variety or I don't have any tubers that are eyed up yet, this is a problem. To alleviate this issue, customers will be requested to submit alternative choices with their order in case their want list cannot be filled. If alternative choices are not provided, I will select varieties that are as similar as possible. I regret that I am being forced to do this, but it is the only solution that I can see to solve the washout issue. I would appreciate any feedback on this matter or any alternative solutions.
Just a reminder that The Dahlia Guy provides FREE FLOWERS (U-Pick) throughout the summer for weddings, special events, shut-ins, and husbands/boyfriends who are in "poor standing". In addition to dahlias, I have zinnias and sunflowers. Flowers are generally available around the 20th of July thru frost. To request flowers, EMAIL the DATE flowers are needed, the flower QUANTITY desired(generally 10 dahlia blooms per arrangement), and any COLOR preferences. It is also helpful to have the type of event and phone contact information. If the requested information is not provided you will get the message READ THE AD.
April showers bring May flowers, but only if you buy your tubers now!!!
I am starting to run low on several varieties so it is time to place your orders. If you are an experienced grower and would like some "bargain" tubers (small, twisted, etc.), let me know. I am selling these at $3 a tuber.
I have several varieties where I am starting to run low on premium quality tubers, so order up while they are still available.
My internet is back so all the "buttons" should work for ordering tubers. The tubers look great and wintered through quite well.

Good news for 2024, except for a small increase in shipping rates, Dahlia prices are the same as last year. I will start taking orders around the 10th of February. As in the past, payment can be made my check, money order, and cash.
Today I finished cutting the last of the dahlias down. The plants won't be dug for a week or so to allow the tubers to harden off and eye up. About 60% of the tubers have been dug and divided. After they dry, they will be bagged and stored in vermiculite in a climate controlled room
It is that time of year when I start cutting my dahlias back in preparation for digging and dividing the tubers. I hate to cut the flowers down when they are so beautiful, but it isn't any fun digging and dividing tubers in November when it is rainy and cold. The plus side is that the house has a lot of pretty bouquets. Tuber sales will start in February.

This is why they are called Dinnerplates. Emory Paul consistently produces blooms that are 12 inches across -- and it generally does NOT need to be staked. My largest bloom was over 14 inches across.

Once again I am providing FREE FLOWERS for the rest of the summer. I will have dahlias, zinnias, and sunflowers available. It is still early for a lot of dahlias due to the late spring, but in a couple of weeks, things should look better. All I ask is that flower pickers set up an appointment to pick, especially for larger needs such as weddings. Appointments can be set up by calling 360 748-0504 or using the email button or message option.
This is my first anemone type dahlia produced from seed. It is call "Puff". It is an early bloomer. With it's Medium/Tall Ht. and long sturdy stems, it is a good cut flower -- and white goes with everything
At the rate things are going, this will be my worst year ever for raising dahlias. I planted a week later than normal and the ground was still wetter and colder than normal. When the dahlias finally emerged, we had a stretch of 85-95 degree weather, which baby dahlias do not tolerate well. This was followed by a week with nite time temps in the 30's. As the pictures show, I have dahlias that are starting to bloom next to dahlias that have just emerged. I have lost several where the tubers rotted and several where they have emerged and wilted because the ground was too cold/wet for roots to develop. I have also lost some to rabbits and for the first time ever --deer!!! Also have had slug issues. Still, it looks like I will eventually have enough blooms to provide FREE FLOWERS. I will post pics when I start taking orders for the flowers.
DAHLIA SALES ARE TERMINATED FOR THE 2023 SEASON. I would like to thank everyone again who purchased tubers from me. Let me know if there were any problems. Out of 200+ tubers that I planted, I only had 2 bad tubers and it was in one variety-- Cafe Au Lait and I don't think I sold any. A reminder that I provide FREE FLOWERS all summer long. I do reserve flowers for special occasions so let me know in advance. Email me or call me at 360 748-0504. Tubers will go on sale next February.
END OF SEASON SALE -- I have 42 varieties available and approximately 130 tubers. (7 Dinnerplate varieties and approx. 30 tubers are included in these amounts) MAKE AN OFFER ON ANY AMOUNT --- THE MORE, THE MERRIER!!! Order by calling 360 748-0504 or email me by using the send button.
The weather has been crazy and it certainly hasn't been conducive to thoughts of spring planting. In spite of the cool wet weather, tubers have been disappearing from the inventory. At the current rate, I expect to be out of tubers within a couple of weeks. My ten packs of dinnerplate tubers may have to be reduced to 8-packs or less and the smaller flowers are not far behind. Bottom line is it is time to order. Just hit the email button or place a call at 360 748-0504.
