2024 ForKids Back-to-School Drive is a wrap!

With the help of this community, we were able to distribute over 1,300 backpacks to ForKids kids, community partners and 31 local school teachers.

There is not nearly the room to list every individual, business and organization that helped send our kids back to school prepped for success, so here are just a few of the donors and volunteers who put a smile on the faces of over 1,300 kids across Hampton Roads this year:

Dragas Construction, USI, Greentree Realty, Dollar Tree/Family Dollar, Newport News Shipbuilding, Cox Communications, Breeden Construction, Beck Roofing, S.L. Nusbaum, Hourigan Construction, Enspire Energy, WTKR and Southern Bank, USI, ADP, FUGE Camp, Navy Federal Suffolk, Sentara, QVC Suffolk, DeLoitte, Rivers Casino, Realtors Have a Heart, ODU Freshmen, and Chesapeake Public Schools Social Workers.

It’s National Make-a-Will Month! ForKids Board member Cline Reasor is focused on the future.

“Growing up I never thought I could participate in something like this. Imagining the number of feet that will cross the threshold of ForKids over the next 10,15, 20 years is overwhelming. I’m so excited about the impact ForKids will have.”

It’s National Make-a-Will Month and we’ve uncovered some interesting old Will requests!

"To my son, I leave the pleasure of working for a living - for 25 years, he thought the pleasure was all mine."

German author Heinrich Heine bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Matilda — provided she remarried. As Heine saw it, then “there will be at least one man to regret my death.”

Whatever your wishes for your loved ones, make sure they are clearly stated in your Will. That also goes for the ForKids families and kids you have been helping!

It’s National Make-a-Will Month!

Aretha Franklin left an estate valued at $18 million but no formal will. Her family just happened to find her handwritten note beneath the cushions of a couch, so her estate can be divided according to her wishes.

Don’t count on your kids cleaning your house top to bottom and finding your scrap paper! Take care of your family by making a will. Take care of the families you have been helping at ForKids with planned giving.

To kick off National Make-a-Will Month, we want to introduce Dwight and Dorothy Humphrey.

Dwight and Dorothy learned about ForKids at church many years ago and wanted to help children who had no home. Their modest monthly donations provided critical support during ForKids’ early days.

When he died in 2000, we learned Dwight had named ForKids a beneficiary in his will. A year later, as ForKids was facing a fiscal crisis, a check arrived.

“As I was taking the rein as Executive Director, state funding was dropping, and federal grants had increased requirements. I needed time to develop a fundraising infrastructure. The Humphreys gave me that time and it was nothing short of miraculous. Instead of shrinking, we grew.” Thaler McCormick, CEO of ForKids.

Take care of the kids you have been helping at ForKids with planned giving: https://www.forkids.org/_files/ugd/fd9995_f00f94d178524f05af3f8761e83473eb.pdf.

More of America’s homeless are clocking into jobs each day 08/01/2024

We see the reality of this every day in our Housing Crisis Hotline: working families and individuals that can't attain housing. Let's make housing affordable for our Hampton Roads workforce!

Our Story

Our Values:

We believe the future of our community is rooted in securing the future of our children.

We believe family responsibility is the key to generational stability.

We believe each individual has unique strengths and abilities that can be nurtured so that they can achieve self-sufficiency.

Our families are our full partners in the process of achieving self-sufficiency. We accomplish goals with them, not for them.

We believe change is a process, not an event. Emergency shelter is not a permanent solution to homelessness.

We believe we must be fully accountable for every contribution made to ForKids and wisely use all funds entrusted to us.

We believe it is our responsibility to educate others about the complex nature of homelessness and advocate for changes in community policies and programs.

We work as a team to address the complex challenges of homelessness through innovative thinking, hard work and service excellence.
