Candy making is a "feel" thing for local family 07/20/2024

Nice story about our business! Thanks WTKR.

Candy making is a "feel" thing for local family Once a month Mirta loads up her car with 24 cases of H.E. Williams’ hard candy to sell at the small country store in Suffolk where she works. Her personal favorite? The pineapple candy.

We're taking a much needed holiday break next week, well be back open on January 2nd!

To everyone who called in orders or came in to buy candy & watch us do our thing, thank you so much! We hope you enjoy our candies with your families this holiday season as much as our family enjoyed making it!

12/19/2022

Today is national hard candy day!
We didn't believe it either, but it's true!

Where else better to celebrate than down here at the candy factory with us?! Don't wait until the last minute and be left wanting, candy is flying out the door as fast as we can make it!

Thanks to everyone who visited and kept us insanely busy all day Saturday! We pumped out 1000 pounds of candy without taking a lunch break AND STILL came close to running out of our best sellers!

Hours for our final working week of 2022 are:
Monday 12/19 - Thursday 12/22: 8am-4:30pm
Friday 12/23 is our last day of the holiday season! We'll be open from 8am - 4:30pm or until we run out of candy! Again, DO NOT WAIT!!!

Thanks for all the love, it's a SWEET LIFE!

Last call for Christmas candy!!!

We'll be open Saturday, December 17 from 10am - 2pm
Then Monday 12/19 - Friday 12/23 8am-4:30pm

Candy has been selling almost faster than we can make it this year which is a blessing, but is also causing some headaches. Please bear with us if we're temporarily out of stock of your favorite flavor, we're working hard to make the best candy we can and get it out to our wonderful customers!

We do not have a website where you can purchase our candy. Our phone number is listed on our page.

We are located at 1230 Perry Street, Chesapeake, VA 23324 in historic South Norfolk. We're tucked away on a little street that backs up to the Poindexter exit on 464 north. We're the little barn-shaped building that smells good.

Visitors are still welcome to watch, but for your and our safety, please keep groups small and reasonable (4-5). If it seems too cramped to work in there, it is! The building is 40 years old and is a working factory filled with hazards, please be mindful of our workspace and keep watch on all children closely. Unsupervised children will be given candy and conscripted into employment until claimed (with valid proof of guardianship).

Thank you all for the love and stories of how your families have cherished our candies for generations. We love being able to take you back in time with our Old Fashioned candy, and hope to continue the tradition of making the holidays sweeter for many years to come!

- Casey Williams, 4th generation Candyman/sometimes employee/page manager

Old-Fashioned Candy, the Family Way

Back in 1919 S.L. Williams founded his own candy factory in the Berkley area of Norfolk County. Nearly 100 years later, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren are carrying on the family tradition of making hard candy, just like S.L. did back in 1919. Over the years a few changes have been made; the name changed to H.E. Williams when S.L.’s son Harold Eugene (Gene Sr.) took over the business, a couple of new were flavors added, and a new location was built in 1982 after the original factory was torn down to make way for interstate 464. However, all the tools, machines, and techniques have been left mostly unchanged since the business started in 1919.

The family business philosophy hasn’t changed much over the years; keep it simple, work hard, and make a great product. All business is done via mail or telephone, there’s not a computer, atm, or cash register to be found, and there’s no online store; payments are accepted in cash or check only. Even still, the family can hardly keep up with the demand for their signature treats, selling batches almost as fast as they make them. We sell our tasty treats right in the factory, through local distributors in VA and NC, and we also ship orders via USPS.

Come on in or give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you with an order!
