What is there to be shameful about? (This will be my first and last time making a post like this)

Today, the owner of a massage clinic I worked at for less than six months back in 2019, pulled up on me while I was leaving my office for the day to ask me if I was ashamed for opening my business close to hers. She drove off once I gave her my answer of no.

What is there for me to be ashamed of?

I don’t believe in competition. Every massage therapist and esthetician is different. My clients are my clients because they like my work, my energy, and my vibe. There’s enough clients in this world for every massage therapist and esthetician to strive.

Not every client is the right fit for me, I’d rather have a group of massage therapists and estheticians to be able to refer clients to. I don’t have a secret grudge against a company that left on respectful terms over five years ago.

The other day I had a conversation with my therapist about my first day back at the gym.

I laughed while I told her that one of the reasons I wasn’t making time for the gym was because I wasn’t seeing instant results 😅

Knowing what I know about staying consistent with wellness and self-care, I found my thinkings relating to my journey silly once said out loud.

Consistency is where the results are.

There was a time when I was unsure of myself in my career; I considered leaving massage therapy and started venturing into a different career path unrelated to massage. However, I quickly learned that the new job wasn’t for me. And every other career I thought of pursuing always led me back to massage therapy in some form. I’m right where I need to be.

A few months ago, I met up with another dual-licensed professional. Initially, I was excited because we had similar journeys; we both were massage therapists for a few years before deciding to become an esthetician.

During our conversation, they asked me about my style of massage. I told them that I’m relaxation-based, I offer a relaxation approach to pain relief, and giving an intensely deep tissue massage isn’t my cup of tea. I don’t like my clients leaving my office, feeling like I beat them up.

Their response was, “Oh..so fluff and buff?”

I don’t have a good poker face (it’s something I’m working on 😅), so quickly, I was met with the “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend” song and dance.

I’m not the massage therapist for everyone, nor do I aspire to be. I don’t believe in the “no pain, no gain” mentality when it comes to massage (there’s nothing wrong if you do).

Yes, there may be a little discomfort in your massage session while I’m working on areas where you feel the most tension and tightness, but I never want my clients to feel like I’m inflicting pain onto them. Most of the time, my deep-pressure, deep-tissue clients nap during their sessions.

You don’t have to be in pain to get results.

I’m a relaxation-based massage therapist, and that doesn’t mean I give “fluff and buff” massages.
