May is Melanoma Awareness Month.

This is Lisa’s story....when I was 21 years old I was living with my parents while in college(studying computer programming). My parents had a pool in the back yard and I decided to go swimming. My mom noticed that I had mole on my back and said that I should go see my dermatologist and have it looked at. I was thinking....how offered do you look at your back, and I am sure she is over reacting, but made the appointment anyway. When I saw my Dermatologist he said “I really do not think its anything to worry about since you have olive skin and only 21 years old, but we will biopsy it anyway since it does have an irregular shape”.
A few days passed and I received a call from my doctor telling me it was melanoma and that I would need to have laser surgery done. Long story short....I caught it early and I knew I could no longer tan outside or in tanning beds anymore. I needed to start taking care of myself and my body. I wear my sunscreen everyday and reapply every two hours! I am VERY thankful that my mom saved my life that day:) and I share my story with my clients daily. I also make sure to tell my clients if I think something something doesn’t look right on their skin.
