I have recently suffered a pretty severe lower back/sciatic injury last weekend and I lost nearly a week of work. I tried to continue working until Tuesday on a brush clearing which proved to be very foolish. I been out of work since, only doing one single yard yesterday which didn’t help and I had to stop. Bottom line is….I’m looking to hire someone who can help me this coming week. If you are interested in making extra money this week, I’ll gladly take you on if you can atleast take over the w**d eating, following behind me on the mower. If your wondering if this can turn into more than just a week….YES it can. I’m going after larger scale woods clearing such as brush, saplings, woods debris, leaf management etc, and I do want to put an end to the era of doing these projects alone. When spring starts again in 2023 I do infact want to hire an employee for that as well. If your serious and interested, please feel free to PM me of send me a text at: 804-931-2895. Thanks! 👍🏻

In approximately 8 to 10 weeks from now will it be mowing season. With that in mind, I thought to share the following...

“Mowing Grass and Bad Weather.”

Many who know me are aware, I prefer not to mow grass in wet conditions. Why? Because mowing wet grass does not cut clean and it tends to result in heavy clippings which causes clumping, and depending upon how wet the lawn is, the clumps can be very extreme which does no justice to ones mowers nor the lawn itself.

Mowing wet lawns increases the risk of damage to equipment, uses more fuel, and it increases the risk of rut damage to the customers yard. Soil is softer and is more slippery when it is wet from rain and the grass roots also become more easily torn out from mowing. These issues are especially challenging if it is a lawn that gets mowed on a biweekly basis. My honest advice is, if a lawn grows relatively fast, it might be wiser to have it cut weekly as opposed to biweekly.

Of course, The service provider shares accountability as well. Equipment maintenance is essential if you are a professional lawn service. Dull unsharpened blades will damage grass, it will destroy a lawn if it is cut with bad blades constantly. If you notice brownish grass tips, uneven cuts, or dying grass....you might want to ask your service if they sharpen the mower blades frequently. But honestly, it should never reach that level. Simply check your blades often, keep your blades sharpened and when needed, replace them ASAP.

Nevertheless, when dealing with a lawn during or immediately after a rain, no matter how new my blades are, I believe in the protocol of allowing it to dry out, at least to a point of no threat of any damage being done to a yard. If some have questioned why some of us do not mow lawns in wet conditions, this is why. Hope this was helpful 👍🏻

“Is W**d Barrier The Ultimate Solution?”

I recently shared some videos on this subject which I do recommend highly. However, though I have no videos of my own as of yet, I decided to write an article on the subject as my own personal contribution.

Firstly, Am I against those who prefer to use w**d control fabric beneath mulch? No, I am not. Nevertheless, I will not promise you this is a permanent solution because realistically speaking, it is not. There is a positive and also a negative!

On the positive scale YES, in the beginning you will not see w**ds and your mulch bed will indeed look fantastic, that is a promise. However, do not get used to it. W**d barrier (or fabric) is really a temporary fix to a very long term ongoing problem. As weeks, months, and seasons continue to pass, nature and environment will continue to press on, things will still find its way to germinate, droppings will fall, weather is another factor, there is the possibility of run off, and the list goes on.

Where w**ds cannot grow beneath the fabric, over time, they will find their way to grow on top of it. And of course, there will come that period in time, when mulch breaks down (and this actually benefits plants more so without fabric than it does with), and the fabric begins to wear over time and w**ds will find their way, germinating will still find its way beneath regardless. Often, w**ds will even become rooted in the fabric itself. This is no opinion, it is a fact.

I will remind you, I’m definitely not proclaiming barrier as a non-effective method of dealing with w**ds, I am just making folks aware that it is a temporary solution, not a permanent one. With this to consider, is it really worth the time and expense of installing in the first place? In my humble opinion, I believe fabric is overrated. I see it as nothing superior nor inferior to other methods of w**d control. With this in mind, and for me personally, is it ultimately worth it? My answer will lean more towards a ‘no’ rather than a yes.

It really comes down to personal preference. However, I would still weigh the ‘pros’ and the ‘cons’ before determining your decision. You might also want to research other methods of dealing with w**ds, and there are definitely others to consider. While I still will and do install barrier, I will also give a customer my honest opinion if asked, rather than agree for the sake of adding onto the price of a job. Of course, there is a price for everything but it does not always need to be in vain. This can also be applied to the extra work involved, be it for doing it yourself or hiring a landscaper, will it truly be worth it? This too is a matter of preference, but I would still advise anyone to weigh the pros and the cons before making a set decision, no matter what that decision is or to where it might apply. Thanks for reading.

What is the right way to Landscape?

I have worked for other Landscape companies in the past. One thing I have undoubtedly noticed is, each of them have an “our way is the right way” attitude, and I’m not going to knock them nor slight them for that. Perhaps for them, they’re way may very well be the RIGHT WAY. I can respect that.

But, what do I personally believe is the RIGHT way? The “right way” is a satisfied customer who truly appreciates the service you provide. It is the WAY which gains the attention of others and for them to desire a similar direction for themselves. The RIGHT WAY is the WAY which is RIGHT in attitude, approach, and with integrity. It is not performing the job for the simple means to perform the job and get paid. It is gaining the confidence from those whom you serve which leaves them with no regrets in hiring you, having confidence in your abilities, and to be pleased by the finished product you have presented to them.

The RIGHT WAY is having enough humility to recognize when you have taken a “wrong” way to make it RIGHT. The “right way” is to love and value the property you are servicing as much as those who own it. The RIGHT WAY is not a catchy logo on the side of your company truck, it is the impression you have left upon the heart of a customer.

This in my humble opinion, is the RIGHT WAY. 👍🏻

“How to Love Your Crepe Myrtle”

Crepe Myrtles are wonderful additions to landscapes, I personally love these trees. And, a wonderful tree deserves wonderful care, agreed?

The correct pruning of a crepe myrtle will tend to yield a more properly shaped tree with blooms that are held more upright on stronger stems. Proper posture and form is an essential with this tree. Not everyone who owns crepe myrtles will always recognize the right way to obtain it’s best form and beauty. Neglect is when you see allot of dead on the crape, and it also produces cross branches, over crowding and unattractive blooms, however, and believe it or not these issues arise from over pruning the tree as well. These demand a balanced and good posture for a beautiful look and overall health.

Another factor to consider is air circulation and sunlight. Otherwise you are inviting a powdery mildew issue, this is also why excessive branches will hurt the plant, not benefit it. Crepes need stronger and strait stems. Allot of owners might not always realize too that the age of the tree and proper season helps, the best season is late winter/spring (typically February thru March) while the tree is in dormancy, and it’s best to avoid allot of future problems while the plant is younger and not after it’s a fully mature giant.

I don’t personally recommend scalping the tree either, allot of folks cut them down to nothing and that isn’t necessary. Only weak branches unable to support bloom or those that grow into the tree or cross with other branches ought to be removed. Consider too that you may not want excessive trunks either. Personally, I appreciate a crepe myrtle that supports between three to seven (if maintained properly). Anything over this will present over crowding in the future and allot of issues that can be avoided. I shared an image (I did not prune this crepe, I have no pics yet of crapes I did, but I like the way the crepe myrtle in the image looks. Nice job.)

A crepe myrtle that is pruned property is one which will appear as if it has not been pruned at all. Thin weak branches, branches crossing or existing in bad areas, and a well circulated center is the main priority for this tree. A good eye for detail and care will continue to keep the crown of this tree beautiful and healthy as well, it is what makes a crape myrtle...a CREPE MYRTLE 👍🏻
