Talking Over Tea On the first of the month, four Spartan students and their staff sponsors made their way downtown at day’s end. “Do I want a coffee? Uh, yeah!” joked Layla Guevara, enrolled in the English 12 class. And more than a coffee or tea met the “Leave to Learn” field trip at The Hawthorn Tree that...

Join us this Friday from 5:30-8pm for Artwalk and enjoy the amazing work of Barbara Wolf.
The ability to create art and work with various mediums has allowed Barbara to develop more skills and to look at the beauty around her with a fresh perspective and appreciation. She has worked with acrylics, oils, watercolor and clay as well as with pastels.
Barbara began experimenting with many forms of art at a very early age. Her grandmother was an artist and inspired her on her journey. She finds while working on an art piece she can be “in the moment” which brings her peace and joy.
Her art has been in galleries in Michigan, Washington state, California, Wyoming and will be on display at The Hawthorn Tree for the month of November.
Our artist of the month for October, Katy Jurgens, did this beautiful painting of our beloved Hawthorn. When she was taking down the display she graciously gave it to us to keep at The Hawthorn Tree! Thank you Katy and thank you for sharing your love of medicinal plants through art!

Somatic Breathwork™ is an embodiment experience that takes you out of your thinking mind and into your body’s electrical network. It lets you release unneeded energy within this network caused by repeating thoughts, feelings, and old narratives by discharging it out through your body.
Your nervous system is the electrical network of your being. Over time, unresolved trauma or chronic stress causes dis-regulation of this network. When dis-regulated, difficulties in your personal or professional life arise. When you heal trauma and stress, you heal the electrical network of your nervous system. When you heal the nervous system, you heal the emotional self so your authentic self can emerge.
Somatic Breathwork™ employs circular connected breathing coupled with rhythmic music to produce a cathartic emotional release. This release may be in the form of moving, shaking, yelling, crying, or laughing. Using the breath, you will engage your innate ability to heal and sweep out any defenses, blockages, restrictions, or pains that hold you back from who you are and how you want to show up in this world.
Ken Conte is the founder of Ancestral Events in Fort Collins, CO and is a Certified Somatic Breathwork™ Practitioner. Ken has had a deep connection to the land and animals. For over 30 years he has dedicated himself to finding answers to life’s tough questions through nature, movement and breath. A lifelong learner he continues to grow his practice through ceremony and commitment to community and others.
Cost is $60. Please pre-register. You will be required to fill out a waiver and bring it to class. We will send you a waiver via email upon registration.
As the weather starts to cool off, we naturally start to go inward in reflection. Join us for a meditation and mindfulness practice at The Hawthorn Tree. The sessions will be one hour in length, with fifteen minutes of instruction and discussion, followed by a thirty minute meditation, and then fifteen minutes of reflection and discussion. The approach will employ concepts and practices from a secular Buddhist perspective. No particular religion or spiritual practice is being promoted, although participants are free to have whatever private religious, spiritual experiences they may have.
To be mindful is to be in the present moment as fully as possible, observing the events of our bodies and minds with curiosity, without judgment. This allows us to assess our experiences in an objective fashion, to begin to free ourselves from established patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving that may not be giving us the outcomes we would like to have. Focusing on our breathing, regulating our breathing, are the core skills in mindfulness.
There is no charge for this and no one has to divulge any personal information. One may join in any discussions or sit and observe quietly. No one is asked to make any commitment of any kind.
These sessions are conducted by Randy Basden, MS, LPC. Randy is a licensed mental health professional with over 35 years in the field and has used meditation in his personal life for much of that time. Over the years Randy has incorporated mindfulness and breath meditation in his professional work and in recent years has made an even greater commitment to Buddhist philosophy, psychology and lifestyle. He closely follows developments in neuroscience and applys the concepts to his work.
