Residents of Puerto Madero are furious after more than 6,300 barrels of crude oil leaked into a protected area of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Locals say the oil has made its way into the sand and water in areas where children typically play and it may take up to 20 years for it to return to normal. Bolivia Buenano, a resident of the area, said, "[No one can] bathe normally in the river, nor drink from here, there is no fish, there is nothing." Buenano has joined a clean up crew assembled by oil transport company OCP, the owner of the pipeline that caused the oil spill. According to OCP, more than 84 percent of the crude has been recovered, but not before damage was done. The oil polluted 21,000 square meters (226,000 square feet) of the Cayambe Coca nature reserve and flowed into the Coca River, an important water source for many riverbank communities.

At least 11 people are dead and four others are missing after an explosion at a coal mine in the Tasco municipality of Colombia’s Boyaca province. The accident occurred on Saturday night and was caused by a buildup of methane in the mine. Officials fear that those who are missing died in the explosion. Accidents in the mining sector occur relatively regularly as some operations are illegal, or do not properly enforce safety standards. However, the mine in question did have approval from Tasco to operate. Colombia experienced 128 mining accidents in 2021, which killed 148 people. So far this year, 19 mining accidents have happened, killing 36 people.

Mexican officials are investigating reports that roughly 17 people were killed in the state of Michoacan. The investigation was launched after a video appeared on the internet showing gunmen storming a funeral wake and dragging mourners outside to be killed. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has asked for patience as the chief prosecutor’s office investigates the event. The video, which appears to have been shot through a neighboring window with a high vantage point, shows the victims lined up against a wall with rifles pointed at them before gunfire prompts the person filming to hide. When the video returns to show the same spot on the street, only smoke and dust are visible. The incident occurred in an area where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the New Michoacan Family and Los Caballeros Templarios have been fighting ongoing turf wars.

According to municipal officials, more than 10,000 residents of Jerez, Zacatecas, Mexico have been forced to flee their homes due to ongoing gang violence in the area. The recent violence has been a result of a turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, Mexico's two most powerful cartels. Jerez government secretary Marco Antonio Vargas stated that people have been displaced from 18 different communities within the municipality. Most of the displaced people are temporarily living with friends or family nearby while others have decided to travel north to seek asylum in the United States. On Thursday, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo declared an environmental emergency as officials struggle to contain a huge oil spill at the country's largest refinery. The spill occurred after a volcanic eruption in Tonga caused massive waves, striking a nearby ship unloading crude oil. According to Environment Minister Ruben Ramirez, about 6,000 barrels were spilled in the incident, leaving oil on 21 beaches. Peru's Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) said in a statement that the spill has affected 1.7 million square meters of land and 1.2 million square meters in the sea. A spokesperson for La Pampilla refinery said they are not responsible for the spill and instead blamed the Peruvian Navy for not issuing a tsunami warning earlier.

According to Brazil's Health Ministry, the country recorded 137,103 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, setting a new record for most cases in a 24 hour period in the country. There were also 351 deaths reported during the same period of time, the highest since November. The previous record for new infections was set last June, at 115,228 cases. These infections are being driven by the highly-contagious omicron variant that has been sweeping across the world. The spread of this variant has filled up medical facilities in Brazil, prompting officials to provide additional resources and deploy more health workers to help manage the surge. The country has recorded 23.2 million virus cases and over 620,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. Brazil has experienced the third highest number of deaths from the virus, after the United States and Russia.

A historic heatwave with temperatures up to 45C (113F) has hit Argentina and knocked out power grids around the country. More than 700,000 people in Buenos Aires have been left without power. Hot, dry air was pushed into the region by the Pacific Ocean’s La Nina weather pattern, causing the hottest day in the country since 1957. There has also been a lack of rainfall that has caused water levels in the Parana river to drop to an almost 80 year low. Electricity companies in Argentina have blamed the power cuts on a huge spike in energy demand caused by the heatwave. Cooler temperatures are expected to arrive on Sunday.

At least 400 undocumented migrants have been left homeless after a massive fire ripped through Laguna Verde, a shantytown in Iquique City, Chile. Laguna Verde is located near the border with Peru and Bolivia and is usually the first place that migrants settle temporarily before they move to other cities or try to regularize their migration status. The settlement's overcrowded condition, narrow passages and lack of water network made it difficult to extinguish the flames. Authorities believe that there were no fatalities during the incident and have ruled out the possibility that the fire was set intentionally. They have opened up at least two schools to temporarily shelter those who lost their homes. Tarapaca Region Presidential Delegate, Miguel Quezada, said that authorities will also set up a social safety net to ensure that the victims can normalize their migration status and receive food donations while the houses are being rebuilt.

According to authorities, six Mexican nationals are accused of kidnapping nine people, including three U.S. citizens, and killing six of them. The Tijuana-based group is in the custody of Mexican officials and will face charges there. The group is accused in the US of operating a kidnapping gang last year, luring victims under false pretenses before holding them at gunpoint and brutally beating them. After the victims were assaulted, the attackers would contact relatives of the victims to demand money or vehicles for their release. If the ransom wasn't paid, the victim would be killed. However, the group is also accused of murdering victims even after the ransom had been paid in a number of instances. A federal grand jury indicted the group on charges of conspiracy to commit hostage taking resulting in death, conspiracy to commit extortion and other crimes.
