Volunteer Immigrant Defense Advocates
A Chicago-based non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to pro bono immigration services in underserved areas of the country.
VIDA is an Illinois Nonprofit Corporation whose mission is to expand access to quality pro bono immigration-related legal services in underserved areas of the United States. VIDA was founded in January 2016 by Chicago immigration attorneys Daniel Thomann, Jacob Briskman, and Chris Elmore. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization. Our first office opened in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 1, 2016 and hosts an Equal Justice Works justice AmeriCorps Fellow.
Friends and supporters: Due to the end of the Equal Justice Works justice AmeriCorps program last March, I am sad to announce that VIDA will be closing its office in Knoxville at the end of the month. It has been an amazing journey and I am proud of what we built and of the fact that we were able to save many children in East Tennessee from deportation. I would like to thank all of you for your help and support over the last two years, but particularly Yeicob Briskovich (Jake Briskman) and Kristofer Kent (Chris Elmore), who stepped up behind this idea in late 2015 and have worked tirelessly to keep it going. I'd also like to thank Valeria Gomez, who left a lucrative practice over 3 years ago in order to serve immigrant children, first at the UT Law Immigration Clinic and then at VIDA. Valeria has worked insane hours for little to no pay, without support staff, and I hope she can be as proud of the work she has done as we are. Few people would make the great sacrifices she has made for this work, and we are eternally grateful to her. Valeria will be moving to Connecticut to work as a clinical immigration professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, where we know she will continue to inspire and succeed.
Thanks again to all of you. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me, and it would not have been possible without your support. We made a real difference, and I'm very proud of what we achieved in East Tennessee. I encourage all of you to continue doing pro bono work. There is a lot of need out there, now perhaps more than ever.
