❤️ Run Three Times Per Week : Structure is very important, but consistency isn’t just 🔑, it’s king. Get three runs in per week starting now to get your body ready for higher mileage and greater demands. 🏃🏻‍♂️💨 Practice Speed Work : Don’t kill yourself, it’s easy to go overboard. But at least remind your body what it’s like to move quickly. Some people will benefit from more, some from less. It all depends on your mindset and your goals. 🏋🏻‍♂️ Strength train : If you want to be durable // recover faster // more with less effort // improve overall health // look better //simply be stronger, then you need to strength train. This could be once a week, it could be four times a week. But it needs to be there. There’s literally no one that wouldn’t benefit from some application of strength training. 🏊🏻‍♂️ Engage in ONE non-running aerobic activity per week : This can be swimming, walking, biking, hiking, team sports, etc. Facilitate efficient recovery, and build whole body fitness in different directions and durations. 🤓 Hire a Coach : I mean, am I biased? Maybe…but only because I know the value. I’ve had my own coach more than once before, and I will again. Whether it’s accountability, developing new levels of fitness, learning more about your abilities or passions, or simply taking the worry out of deciding what to do and what’s right for you every step of the way, having a coach is only more help, more security, and greater potential. ⏱️ Start NOW Don’t just wait until the “18 Week Training” begins. You need a comfortable base established by the time you begin the 16-20 weeks of “marathon training.” You don’t need to go out hard everyday (you shouldn’t), but you can work on building your aerobic and strength base now so you have less demand on your body when the time comes. // 🤑 Invest where it counts. Hiring a coach will ensure you’re not wasting on your time or doing more than need. Get a gym membership to keep you working no matter the weather, or reinforce the “separate environment” to keep yourself focused. Keep a kettlebell at home for quick workouts or exercises. You don’t need an hour in the gym every day, and you shouldn’t be spending time on workouts that get you less than what you put into them. // 💪 Do more with less. What are the workouts I need? Do only those.You want a lot of low intensity and only ONE quality speed day each week (maybe even less). Run for time and not for mileage. Schedule 30 min, 60 min, or 90 min runs as you need. After a few weeks, fit in one 2 hour day each week. Your body knows intensity and duration, not mileage or pacing. //✋ Outsource, ask for help.Where do you need help? Can you have friends or family help with the kids? Can you hire a dog-walker while you workout or a housekeeper to help clean the house? It’s incredibly versatile. You can easily and effectively build whole body strength with the right kettlebell. Even single exercises can work so much of the body that your bang for your buck PER EXERCISE goes up as well! Personally, I’d look for a 16kg, maybe a 24kg kettlebell. Kettlebells can train: Strength / Power / Stability / Mobility / Durability. When it comes to convenience, kettlebells can be easily stored away without taking up much space at all. I can build my at-home gym without needing to build an “at home gym.” Deadlifts, squats, rows, carries, presses, core work, swings and power moves, lateral and transverse planes. I can go outside, inside, in my living room, in the garage, in front of the Christmas tree, by the pool, wherever you want. So this Christmas, get yourself a gift. When you are a part of something bigger than yourself, everything you do is for something bigger than yourself. But in order to be there to provide and inspire, you have to be present as well. At the same time, we have to take care of ourselves and our health, in order to be there and engaged with the ones we love. Would you rather watch your kids grow up from the sideline or by their side? So how do you prioritize your needs without putting off the needs of everyone else? Or better, while including or inviting the needs and dreams of someone else…It’s not like we can just neglect those around you until you are at your best. But how often have you said, “yeah we can get to that later,” “maybe next time,” “oh I’m too tired for that,” etc? You do not put your family and your loved ones on the back burner because you’re not “good enough yet.” That does exist. Yet, it seems to be how many of us act. I myself make this mistake more often than I care to admit! In addition to our avoidance, we still shape our lifestyles, our eating habits, our activities separate from our kids or even our partners even when we think we’re trying to better ourselves (for them? I wonder how often that connection is made or missed…)🙁 We work out on our own; our kids never see us lift a weight.🙁 We take supplements and pills and tell our kids they’re not good for them. (Can we find more ways to lead by example and get more nutrition from our food and meals, even if we still take certain supplements here and there?)🙁 We give our kids desserts, and restrict ourselves from enjoying them.🙁 We eat different meals at the same time.🙁 We take the dogs for a walk, while the kids watch TV. Invite your kids to be a part of your lifestyle. You may not have noticed but your lifestyle and that of your kids is likely very different. When you’re cooking, they’re watching TV. When they’re napping, you’re doing chores. When you’re catching up on work, they’re running around the house. When they’re at the playground, you’re standing there bored. When you’re…you get the point? But you’re one family, one community. And many of your responsibilities are actually the same…or should be. Work together to save time and get more done! Tempo runs are hard, but they don’t have to be *that* hard. Assuming that you're actually not running too hard, and are keeping a pace that is appropriate for your training and fitness, but yet still find the tempo runs excruciating, here are 4 things that might be holding you back: 1. FATIGUE IS AN ILLUSION // Okay, yes, fatigue is real. But it's more of an illusion that your brain creates to hold you back from risking injury or worse. When you feel tired, you still have more power and potential than you realize. Practice mindset strategies to empower yourself to overcome your brain's protective mechanisms. // 2. YOU NEED MORE LOW INTENSITY Regardless of your speed or distance, you're really only as good as your aerobic training (loosely). If you're not as intentional with your low intensity training (80% of your workload), then your high intensity training (20%) will lose potential. // 3. YOU’RE NOT CONTROLLING YOUR BREATH This does not exactly mean "breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth," as your tempo runs will be largely mouth-breathing to get more oxygen to your muscles. But when you have control over your breath, you can keep the nervous system more relaxed under more stressful environments. // 4. YOU DON’T STRENGTH TRAIN If you want your running to be easier, lift weights. And work yourself up to lifting as heavy as safely possible. This may take time, and that’s okay. The stronger you are, the more force you produce, and the more efficient your running economy becomes. Tempo runs are hard, but they don’t need to be excruciating or impossible.
