Woke Chicago

We strive to create change from the inside out by working hard to re-invent a wellness culture of impact that is rooted in unity, equity, and love.

Our work disrupts inequity in well-being by creating access to trauma-informed movement and mindfulness programs within under-resourced Chicago communities & schools. a minority female-led non-profit organization (501c3) formed in response to 2020's cries for racial justice in America & COVID-19's impact on communities of color.

Born in 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Diane Nash left the city to attend Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. In Nashville, Nash experienced the full effect of the Jim Crow system for the first time.

In 1959 she began attending nonviolence workshops given by James Lawson. Initially a skeptic of nonviolent tactics, Nash began to understand their effectiveness and marveled at the willingness of people to risk their lives for the sake of others.

She had the opportunity to practice nonviolent direct action after the Student Central Committee in Nashville organized sit-ins in local department stores.

During the spring of 1961 Nash played a crucial role in sustaining Freedom Rides initiated by the Congress of Racial Equality.

She made important contributions to the Birmingham Campaign, March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and the Selma Campaign & received the Rosa Parks Award from SCLC in 1965.

From the late 1960s onward, Nash taught in Chicago public schools and continued her activism organizing tenants, welfare support, and housing advocates.

Nash was always ready to do what was necessary to make a mark. To change the world, she says with a laugh, โ€œsometimes you have to be bad.โ€

Amanda Gorman is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history as well as an award-winning writer who has written for the New York Times and has three books forthcoming with Penguin Random House.

Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora.

In 2016, at the age of 18, Gorman founded the nonprofit organization One Pen One Page, a youth writing and leadership program.

While at Harvard, Gorman became the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate in April 2017.

In 2017, Gorman said she intends to run for president in 2036; "Seeing the ways that I as a young black woman can inspire people is something I want to continue in politics.

I donโ€™t want to just speak works; I want to turn them into realities and actions."

"One of the preparations that I do always whenever I perform is I say a mantra to myself, which is 'I'm the daughter of black writers.

We're descended from freedom fighters who broke through chains and changed the world. They call me.'

And that is the way in which I prepare myself for the duty that needs to get done."

Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman in Congress (1968) and the first woman and African American to seek the nomination for president of the United States.

Though pursuing a political career, she stated that she faced a โ€œdouble handicap,โ€ reflecting on the intersectionality of her identities as a Black woman.

In 1964, Chisholm ran for and became the second African American in the New York State Legislature.

There, โ€œFighting Shirleyโ€ introduced more than 50 pieces of legislation and championed racial and gender equality, the plight of the poor, and ending the Vietnam War & in 1977 became the first Black woman and second woman ever to serve on the powerful House Rules Committee.

Chisholm retired from Congress in 1983 & co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.

Of her legacy, Chisholm said, โ€œI want to be remembered as a woman โ€ฆ who dared to be a catalyst of change.โ€

Dr. Mae C. Jemison is the first Black female astronaut & in 1992, flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first Black woman in space.

Born in Decatur, Alabama, Jemison moved to Chicago at a young age and grew up here, spending most of her youth in the library learning about all aspects of science, especially astronomy.

She later went to Stanford and served as head of the Black Student Union, later going on to travel the world teaching and doing medical research before being accepted into NASA's astronaut training program.

In all, she spent more than 190 hours in space before returning to Earth on September 20, 1992.

Following her historic flight, Jemison noted that society should recognize how much both women and members of other minority groups can contribute if given the opportunity.

Today we recognize our current Vice President, Kamala Harris.
She is the United States' first Black, female vice president, the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, & the second Black woman to serve in the US senate.
She has become a leading advocate for social-justice reform & is making efforts to be progressive, especially with the LGBTQ community. She believes that the fight for racial justice should be everyoneโ€™s fight & is often been the only Black person in the room, the only woman, forced to prove sheโ€™s as good as, if not better than, everyone around herโ€“ paving the way for black voices to be heard for generations to come.

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting some of the amazing women who have given their light to American history and serve as empowering role models not just for women, but for all.

To kick us off, we bring you none other than The First Lady of Civil Rights & Mother of the Freedom Movement, Rosa Parks.
She is most well known for her refusal to move to the back of the bus to make way for white passengers on December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama.
By the time Parks boarded the bus in 1955, she was an established organizer and leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama.
Parks not only showed active resistance by refusing to move she also helped organize and plan the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Parks courageous act and the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott led to the integration of public transportation in Montgomery & was jailed for refusing to give up her seat and lost her job for participating in the boycott.
Today, we remember her for a rich legacy of resistance against racial discrimination and injustice. #

Every January for the past few years, I've set an intention to do yoga each day of the month. This year is a little different.

Woke Chicago has partnered with Parker Academy to bring yoga, meditation, and mindfulness to the students, faculty, and parents of students. Every Wednesday this month, I've had the opportunity to start my day with leading a P.E. class of 5th graders in a short virtual yoga flow.

So this January I've been consistent with my intent to my daily practice because I want to bring my best self every Wednesday morning for the kiddos.

I'm incredibly grateful to be part of the community and have amazing opportunities like these.
