Fajr
The Ephraim Bahar Cultural Center (EBCC) sponsored a prayer and action rally against violence in the neighborhood on July 29, 2022. Our theme was re-build the family as strong family is the key to strong communities. Our leader Imam Warith Deen Mohammed said that if you establish a masjid or Islamic center in a community, we should concentrate on a four-block radius around our center and work with that community to help make it a better community. We are thankful to Allah for blessing us with such a beautiful day and with beautiful weather all throughout the day as if He was showing us his approval for what we were doing.
The rally started at noon with venders all setup and the program opened with prayer given by Rev. Brain Smith and Imam Lawrence Najieb. A report from the community policing department (caps) on crime and violence’s statistics in the neighborhood was given by officer Raymond Tracy and Jafa Smith address the importance of organizing block clubs. Then we went into addressing the solution to ending violence from different perspective from our guest speakers form diverse organizations. Imam Lawrence Najieb Moderated the program, and our speaker included Rev. Brain Smith, Imam Omar Abdul Karim EBCC Director, Officer Raymond Tracy of CAPS, Jafa Smith Community Organizer, Darriel Williams EBCC dawah coordinator, Maryam Ali eldest daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Rafi Peterson of CP4P community partners for peace, Dr. Lynne Muhammad founder of the STREAM lab, Dennis Muhammad of Do for Self, Imam Tariq El-Amin of Masjid Al Taqwa, Michael Nasir Blackwell IMAN community organizer, Richard Reed. All the speakers shared their views on the importance of the family and family structure as it relates to living in community life with our neighbors and how it would stop all violence in our communities if we understood it. We also had our youth who gave a phenomenal perspective on how they saw violence was hurting our community and the importance of having a loving, nurturing, and caring household.
First, I would like to thank all those who donated two hundred dollars to sponsor a student with a HP Chromebook computer. The EBCC gave out seventeen HP Chromebook computers to those students who shared their stories and who participated in the rally. Our message was strong and clear as it reverberated throughout the community with our powerful amplifier and speakers; it’s time to re-build the family putting G’d first then nurture, love, care, hug, educate, instill moral value, and principled back into our children’s life’s.
And after taking care of business, we enjoyed entertainment with Rico a Michael Jackson impersonator and a fashion show by Danyale Williams fashion designer of Birthday Girls Fashion.
Our goal is to build on this event and work with like mind community members to continue our efforts to combat violence in our community.
