“The Mono Story”
Weeks later…and for first time
since I became ill with
my boyfriend
and I were allowed to see each other
It was a Friday night and
there was a repeat of
On this particular night…
LIVE from the in
it was David Bowie’s
Up until that time we’d never
heard of and
when he came out on stage
our mouths were
When’s the last time
you were agape 🤔
The deal was this. If my boyfriend
and I were to “see” each other
we would have to sit 6 feet apart
(social distancing even then)
We agreed. So, we sat at opposite
ends of the couch; watching
My fellow had just finished playing
a game and extraordinaire
Thomas Pride and Geri McCaffrey
were also at this game
Having a parent as your high school history teacher is one thing
Having your parent’s best friends
as your teachers is a
whole other ballgame
You know the saying
have big ears
This was sort of one of those moments
In those days, we lived in Warner’s
grandparent’s home
We loved it there

Dad’s study, there arose
such a clatter!! The next thing
you know, Mr McCaffrey is
sneaking through the study
to “spy” on me and my friend.
Geri is peering at us
from behind the door
He knows we can see him 👀
Maybe you’ve seen glimpses
of Geri’s humor, in typing class…
That glint he’d get in his eyes??
In all my years, I have met few people
as comedic as Geri McCaffery
Comparing him to
wouldn’t be a stretch
So, here’s Geri; sashaying,
into the living room,
like he was lost. Pulling up
his pants totally up to his underarms,
he’d walk into the room
with a cigarette 🚬 saying
“can we get you kids anything?”
This went on for an hour!
Throughout the evening and on opposite sides of the couch;
my friend and I would lock eyes
The poor guy, he didn’t know
if it was polite to even smile
From the laughter/ guffawing
in the kitchen, my Mother,
father and Judy McCaffrey
were having the times
of their lives and so were we
