The FBI Is Looking To Get More Diverse ... And It's Hiring The agency is holding a Diversity Agent Recruitment event on July 12. Starting salary is around $71,000.

Madison Police Department - City of Madison, Wisconsin 09/12/2016

Greetings,

Do you know any students who might consider a career in community policing? If so, we are interested in meeting them! The Madison Police Department is hiring and will be on your campus on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 from 4p-5:30p at UIC Forum, 2nd Floor, Room E
Chicago, IL. We would love a chance to get to know your students and talk to them about their career aspirations.

The beauty of our recruitment campaign is that ALL majors are welcome; no previous course work or experience in criminal justice is required and all of the training is provided (while on salary and with full benefits).

Our Department is at the forefront of "community policing" and employee-based problem solving. It is a place where individuals "can and do" make a difference--due to our talented and diverse work force. But in order to continue as a "front runner," I am asking for your help.

We want to recruit people who can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. We need service-oriented individuals who want to work collaboratively to improve the overall quality of life for our residents. MPD seeks individuals committed to providing high quality services and a willingness to work in partnership with a multi-cultural citizenry.

The next class is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2017.

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT THE APPLICATION AND HIRING PROCESSES FOR THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT.

MYTH: I can apply to take the upcoming test up until the test date in April 2016.

FACT: Applications will ONLY be accepted until January 31st, 2016.

MYTH: I can’t be hired if I have a criminal record of any kind.

FACT: You can still apply to become a police officer even with a previous record or drug use. The
Chicago Police Department is looking for people who are current upstanding citizens and will
take your previous history into context. Once you take the POWER test, the background investigation includes a thorough check of your personal character and activities over a substantial period of time to get a full picture of your life. Evidence that you have engaged in certain activities may be disqualifying depending on the circumstances. However, failure to disclose any requested information is grounds for disqualification.

MYTH: I am too young/too old.

FACT: Applicants must be 18 years or older by February 29, 2016. At the time of hire, new officers must
be between the ages of 21 and 39 years old (40 year-olds are not eligible for hire).

MYTH: Veterans don’t get any preference for the exam.

FACT: Veterans do receive preference during the application process - when setting up your profile, you
will be asked if you qualify.

MYTH: I heard the exam, background check and psychological test discourages minority candidates.

FACT: We have seen that applicants of all ethnicities pass the psychological test at similar rates. There
is no evidence that suggests these tests effect any one group disproportionately. Once you
apply, you’ll be sent details for the exam, which be held the weekend of April 16th 2016, as well
as plenty of materials to help you prepare for the test

MYTH: I need to be a U.S. citizen before I apply – or if I apply, the Chicago Police Department will
question my family’s immigration status.

FACT: Applicants only need to be permanent residents of the United States. The Chicago Police
Department is not an immigration enforcement agency nor do we question any family member’s
status.

MYTH: I applied in 2013 and I haven’t been called yet – the CPD is not calling people still remaining on
the list.

FACT: All applicants on the current list will be called to begin the pre-employment process before a new
list is used. Failure at any point of the pre-employment processing will remove a candidate from
further consideration. Because of this, you may want to consider applying to sit for the 2016 exam. Taking the 2016 exam will NOT affect your placement on the 2013 eligibility list but may create an additional opportunity for consideration in the event you did not pass a component of pre-employment processing. We encourage you to apply again before January 31st. For more information on current eligibility requirements, please click here.

MYT: I wasn’t eligible or was rejected in the past – that means I’m not eligible now.

FACT: Failure in processing from another exam does make you ineligible for hire under the 2016 exam.
In addition, certain requirements to become a police officer, such as age, have changed in recent
years – please check to see if you are currently eligible to apply.

MYTH: I have to have all my college credit hours completed to apply.

FACT: You do NOT have to have any college credits completed to apply for the April 2016 exam.
You will only need to have your required credits completed after you passed the exam and are
referred to begin at the Academy, which could be a period of years. The Chicago Police
Department provides opportunities to receive tuition reimbursement for college credits. Additionally, there are education exemptions for previous military service.

Welcome back! I want to encourage all interested students to attend an information session to explore any interest in reviving the Criminal Justice Society which was pretty much inactive last year. A vibrant student organization is a great resource for criminal justice students and serving as an officer certainly looks good on your resume. The meeting will be Thursday, September 10th at 2pm in the Wabash Building, Room 1017. If you have any questions email me at [email protected]
Thanks,
Dr. McCoy
