-Our knowledgeable staff takes care of everything from ordering to set-up, sales, and packing up at the end of the fair.
-Organizations have various options after the fair for cash and/or credit donations.

Once again, taking advantage of my reach with the store. If you can, help out. I’ve known Phoebe’s dad since he was in 6th grade. He was an awesome person, and I admired him a lot. Smart as hell, a good person, super funny in a dry way, a really good artist (He even had a piece in the Beverly Arts Center art competition a few years ago). I liked him even more than he knew.

When True Grit by Charles Portis came out, Roald Dahl wrote that it was the “best novel to come his way in a long time.” Bestselling author Donna Tartt wrote one edition’s introduction and narrated the audiobook because she loved it so much. Mattie Ross is a young female character on par with Scout Finch and Anne (of Green Gables) Shirley. Read it and you’ll understand that this is truly a great American novel. The film, too, is another American classic, lovingly remade by the Coen brothers. Pick up your tickets from The Lyric Theater’s website and support two local businesses who have collaborated in this endeavor so we can keep on making our community vibrant. It’s going to be a great night.

PLEASE SHARE THIS FANTASTIC NEWS! Perhaps you saw it on the Waldo passport and asked yourself, “What is THAT?!” Maybe you read about it in this week’s The Beverly Review. Maybe this is the first you’re hearing about it. In any case, we’re excited to announce something that has been in the works for a few years. We are proud to announce that we are, once again, doubling down on our commitment to the community.
On July 15th at 10:00 AM, Bookie’s Used Book Outlet (BUBO) will open its doors for a soft opening. It will be located at 2419 W. 103rd St. That’s right! The old Bookie’s location by the 7-11. That space has been closed since I left and such an eyesore. The purpose is twofold.
First, we had an entire bookstore taking up FOUR large storage units that were costing a fortune. This is an extreme moneysaving opportunity.
Second, the number of people who couldn’t tell that we still had used books at the beautiful Western Ave. storefront has been shocking. We are rededicating ourselves to used books for economic and environmental reasons.
Third, we’re thinking about the future. We’ve made it clear that we have struggled since COVID. We’ve shifted our business model to accommodate the new normal. That said, taking over this new/old storefront is a consideration for the future. With rising rent and labor costs, before we ever need to shut down completely, we can consider shifting to this space as a savings measure.
Fourth, shifting some books out of the Western storefront will give us some additional space to host larger and more frequent events — book clubs, author signings, story times, and more! The new space is beautiful. It looks fantastic and is reminiscent of the old Bookie’s (that opened 35 years ago next month) with some major upgrades. The shelves are packed with very low-priced books. We’re sure you’ll love it. Stop by soon! Comment with any questions. Again, please share this post far and wide.
Next Waldo participant! Beverly Phono Mart! This place is amazing! With a magnificent selection of new and used vinyl, from classic blues to classic rock to quirky unknowns to the newest and hottest hip-hop, alternative, and r&b, BPM (how clever is that?) has something for everyone. They’re located at 1808 W.
103rd. Stop in for the records. Stay for the Waldo hunt!
Next up, take a visit (Tuesday - Saturday) to Little Hoppers Playroom (aka Little Hoppers Cafe) at 2760 W. 111th. There you can sip on gourmet coffee while your little one(s) play in their safe play-space (and look for Waldo). They have private play times, birthday party packages, and more!!!
Another reason to abandon that awful company that only cares about itself and support libro for your digital audiobooks. They’re real people with real cares. They work with us and other independent bookstores, including these disabled-owned indies! Make the switch today! libro.fm/bookies
Happy Saturday! Have you started to find Waldo yet? If not, you can pick up a passport at any participating business — including the Beverly Arts Center! They’re at 2407 W. 111th, and they’re the next randomly-selected participant! We’re so lucky to have this facility in our community. Shows, classes, camps. They provide so much. I’ve included shots of my daughter at a ballet recital and doing a Vaudeville routine at camp and my son at his piano recital. Take advantage of what they have to offer!!! And find Waldo!
Next randomly-featured Waldo participant is Mosaics Tea! They’re at 10448 S. Kedzie. They’ve got loose leaf tea, prepared tea, an afternoon high tea service, tea brewing equipment, and a hidden Waldo! When I dropped our hidden friend, I picked up a wonderful iced drink with dragonfruit! Check them out ASAP!
From baby shoes to Doc Martens to ballet slippers to comfort foot wear to tap shoes and everything in between, our next randomly-selected “Find Waldo in the 19th Ward” participant is Big 'N Little Shoes Chicago! They’re at 3142 W. 111th in Mount Greenwood. They participated last year too, so maybe they’ll have two Waldos hidden! Go find him and pick up a pair of shoes for each member of the family!
Come get your holiday reads today until 6pm because Bookie’s is closed on the 4th! We will reopen at 10am on Friday.
We hope everyone has a fun and safe holiday!
