His advanced technique allows patients to heal faster and with less pain. Hip and Knee replacements with Dr. Richard Berger are anything but typical. Dr. Berger was joined by his patient Teddy Koukoulis, a former professional golfer and golf coach, on the Apple Podcast “Living the Good Life.” Dr. Berger and Teddy addressed golfers and told them not to wait to get hip and knee replacement because they often end up compensating and injuring other body parts. Teddy also complimented Dr. Berger for his virtual consultation program, the BEST (Berger’s Elective Surgical and Telemedicine) experience.

We love our hotel partner Thank you so much for taking great care of our patients, and our team! ⭐️
Patient Martha Linscott had a knee replacement in January, and has made huge accomplishments in the golf world because of it!
Patient says,” After a couple months of work, we went to Dallas this past Sunday to attempt to qualify for the US Women’s Qualifier. The USGA requires players to walk, and it was 103 degrees for the tournament. I did it and we owe Dr. Berger’s Team a massive thank you!”
“It takes a village!”
At Doctor Berger’s practice, we know experience with every team member aids in recovery.
Our patient, Julie, has accomplished plenty since her replacement last year!
Julie says,” To commemorate the one year anniversary of my knee replacement, I climbed Kilimanjaro. This would not be possible without you and your team!”
Behind every successful joint replacement journey is a caring team, providing support, encouragement, and expertise every step of the way. ⭐️

Meet Caryn Honig, Texas patient with a passion and purpose to run.
Winning is a habit; success is a choice.
Patient and avid golfer Teddy Koukoulis (age 62) wanted to get back on the golf course and win his game.
Just a mere 3 weeks after his left total knee replacement with Dr. Berger, Teddy returned to the golf course to play 18 holes, shooting a 74, along with winning his club championship!
Teddy states,” These are things that I haven’t been able to do in the last 6 years without significant discomfort and swelling.”
Every day, we are here to provide unparalleled care, because our patients deserve nothing but the best. ⭐️

Osteoarthritis is not just a condition; it is a journey that many of us must navigate. It is a chapter in our joint’s story, where wear and tear lead to discomfort and limitations.
Joint replacement can rewrite that narrative. It is the change to reclaim mobility, rewrite the ending, and start a new chapter of strength and freedom.
Happy Administrative Professionals’ Day!
The organizational skills, kindness, dedication, and attention to detail are second to none. Thank you for making our lives and patient lives easier.
Here are some things that our administrative team takes care of, to make your life easier!

This weeks celebrates our incredible financial coordinator, Vennessa!
Our office would be lost without her. Even with hundreds of surgical patient each month, she is always one step ahead!
Whether she is calling to collect surgical payments, answering tough financial questions, or fighting insurance companies on your behalf - she's always looking out for our patient's best interest.
When she's not busy being our insurance guru - Vennessa loves to spend time with her family, sing in her church, and train at the gym. In 2022, she entered her first NPC Fitness Competition - and placed 1st in her group!
She inspires our team with her resilience, discipline, and organization. Vennessa is everyone's biggest cheerleader and always goes out of her way to be a team player. We are so lucky to have her!
Patients often ask how we have perfected the minimally invasive knee and hip replacement. In one word... practice. And lots of it!
In 2001, we performed the first Outpatient Hip Replacement here in Chicago. The same applies to the knee - both Partial and Full Outpatient Replacements were first performed by our practice in 2003.
No physician or physical therapist thought this would be possible - but we fought every step of the way to ensure our patients were able to recover in the comfort of their own homes.
Since then, we have performed over 25,000 joint replacement surgeries. What an absolute honor.
What does life look like for Mark 3.5 weeks after total knee replacement?
Tennis for an hour, then off to the gym for some training. A 30 minute Peloton ride and some weight lifting...then to the trails for a challenging 2.5 mile hike! Yes, you read that right - 3.5 weeks after surgery!
Let us be clear - this may not be what recovery looks like for each patient. But this is WELL within the realm of possibility. Your new knee will work as hard as you allow it to!
Remember to save the first three weeks for icing, elevating, and physical therapy. After three weeks, we want you to get out there and test the waters - you'd be surprised at what you're capable of!
Like Mark says, "Not bad for a 61 year old!" 😉
Join us on Saturday, September 30th from 5:00 -7:00 pm at the Porsche Exchange in Highland Park! We will be enjoying cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and an exclusive speaking engagement followed by Q&A.
We are grateful for the groundswell of support we have received from our Chicago patients. As a way of saying thank you, we hope you will join us for the exciting, informational session about the transformation of our surgical process and new advances in joint replacement.
We encourage you to bring a friend (or two!) to learn more about the cost of arthritis and getting their life back.
Don't miss this exceptional opportunity to learn, connect, and be inspired. We ask that you RSVP with Courtney Kelly by September 11th at (901) 619 7794.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Celebrating our incredible Nurse, Rose, on this week!
Rose's strength is definitely her ability to create positive relationships with patients. She is kind, communicative, and always so helpful! Rose is also SO smart - she is in charge of ordering each patient's medications and ensuring they are delivered in time for surgery.
Her favorite part about her job is meeting new patients and helping them get back to doing the things they love. She LOVES living in Chicago and exploring new restaurants, parks, and neighborhoods. Plus - no one loves Notre Dame Football more than this girl!
We are SO lucky to have Rose on our team and love the concierge driven care that she provides patients. If you have any memories of chatting with Rose before or after surgery - feel free to leave them in the comments :)
Julie says her joint replacement changed her life.
At three weeks, she was back to hitting with the ball machine. By seven weeks, she ran a 10k with her sister and daughter. And at eight weeks, she won a Tennis Playoff Match that qualified her team a spot in the Sectionals Championship. Fantastic!
We are amazed by her recovery. For the first time in 5 years, she is playing tennis without a knee brace or sleeve. She put in hard work during recovery - and it paid off!
We mean what we say - get out there and see what your new joint can do! You'll be amazed by what you find.
Happy to the one and only, Rachel Schiller!
It would probably be easier to name the tasks in our office that Rachel doesn't do, rather than trying to list her roles!
Scheduling clinical appointments & surgeries, assisting with coordination for out-of-state patients, teaming up with our Game Ready representatives, and even marketing - this girl truly does it all.
Rachel is a Michigan Native and recently moved back to the area, so she spends most of her time with us virtually! As much as we miss having her in the office, we love keeping up with her adventures in Wine Country. She loves hiking with her two dogs - Ava and Ace, and spends lots of time getting their energy out!
Our patients (and our team!) are so lucky to have Rachel as an advocate. Her level of care and dedication to creating a positive experience is unmatched - she is truly one in a million!
Next time you call into our office, be sure to give an extra cheerful "hello" to the best patient liaison out there.
George Taurulis consistently impresses our team - his positive demeanor and desire to stay active made him a perfect fit for our practice.
George sat down to chat more about his experience and what brought him to our team. The key to success? He pushed himself in physical therapy, dedicated the first 6 weeks to his recovery, and followed our protocol to a T!
Be sure to watch until the end to see George, Dr. Berger, and Wendy race to the finish line!
This week on we are celebrating our incredible nurse, Brett!
Brett does so much for our team! She spends each afternoon at the hospital with our surgical patients preparing them to go home. She also helps to manage our GetWell Loop App - which sends recovery reminders and allows patients to text in questions and concerns any time of day!
Brett is always willing to step up and help a fellow teammate. Her positive attitude and quirky humor add so much fun to our office.
When she's not helping patients - Brett loves spending time with friends, going to concerts, and spoiling her two cats - Tuna and Toast.
She's also celebrating a very special birthday this weekend! Be sure to leave your best wishes in the comments :)
Our Story
In a typical hip or knee replacement surgery, a surgeon makes a 12-inch incision cutting muscle, tendon and bone. A patient spends three or four days in the hospital, then it’s a month before they can drive and three months before they can go back to work.
But hip and knee replacements with Dr. Richard Berger, orthopaedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush and assistant professor of orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center, are anything but typical.
A pioneer of minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, Dr. Berger performs surgeries on an outpatient basis. A few hours after they emerge from the operating room, his patients typically walk 200 feet around the nurse’s station, climb up and down a flight of 15 stairs, and then go home the same day.
Normally, surgeons cut muscles and tendons, and the joint is dislocated. There are a lot of functional restrictions, and the patients have a great deal of pain. Then, because they’re afraid of the pain, they’re apprehensive about moving their leg in physical therapy.
