We’ve currently raised $8,305 for laid-off iO staff members! Thank you all who have donated so far.

We would LOVE to get to $15,000 by the end of the week. Any amount helps! If you can’t donate, please share! Any money declined by the iO staff will then go back into our community to be donated to an up-and-coming thester space devoted to diversity and inclusion or to other individuals in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic!

Please help The James Conklin Memorial Scholarship as we seek to raise money for staff members who have been laid off due to iO Chicago's recent closure. JCMS has kicked off this fundraiser by donating $4,000 but we need your help!

In the past, an iO staff member has probably helped you get comp tickets for family and friends, served you your chicken tenders and beer, directed you or your patrons to their appropriate show, or kept the lights on you/your friends while you performed/watched. Please consider giving back to them during this difficult time.

In the event that any iO staff member declines their relief award, JCMS will either use that money to support other Chicago comedy community members in need or we will donate that money to an up-and-coming theater with a training center that shows a strong focus on diversity and inclusion. No matter what, your money either will go to support individuals in the Chicago comedy community who are in need of support or institutions that can support us all.

Due to iO's recent closure, the James Conklin Memorial Scholarship will no longer be awarding training scholarships to iO Chicago programs. We will be announcing our new partner for training scholarships soon. In the meantime, keep a look out on our social media channels tomorrow for an announcement on our next relief project!

JCMS 2020 Chicago Relief Fund 03/23/2020

The James Conklin Memorial Scholarship will not be awarding scholarships to the iO Summer Intensive this year. Instead, we will be awarding 12 $500 stipends to members of the Chicago Comedy community who are experiencing financial hardship due to layoffs and theater closures due to COVID-19.

The James Conklin Memorial Scholarship typically awards $3,000 to two applicants to be used towards their completion of the iO Summer Intensive. Due to COVID-19, iO and other theaters have closed their doors indefinitely and travel restrictions would restrict a good amount of our applicant pool. Because of this, we will not be awarding two individuals with our typical scholarships in 2020. Instead, we will be dividing up the $6,000 we typically split between two recipients into $500 stipends for 12 individuals who have been affected by COVID-19 layoffs in the Chicago comedy community.

Typically awarding our scholarship funds is a relatively easy and positive experience because we can make value decisions -- usually two video submissions are better than the rest and those are the applicants who are chosen. We all feel a little uncomfortable with making a value decision on individuals who are in true need during this crisis -- not being able to afford basic human necessities is much different than wanting to attend a summer of improv classes. Because of this we want YOU to nominate someone in our community who you know needs a little extra help to get through this time and whose character you can speak to.

Who Qualifies:
-Must be a Chicago resident.
-Any performer or staff member who has been affected by the closure of iO, Second City, Annoyance, or CIC. We are choosing to help folks associated with these four theaters because James was involved at these theaters.

What You Do:
-Think of someone in need and fill out the form below before April 1st!
-You may submit multiple responses.

We will be contacting the recipients ASAP. Additionally, because many members of the JCMS board are also members of the Chicago Comedy community and will likely know many of the nominated individuals, James's parents Mike and Deb will be choosing recipients based on the content of individual nominations and/or the volume of nominations for a specific individual. Once selected recipients will be sent their $500 through Zelle or Venmo and may choose to collect the lump sum or set up a weekly payment plan.
