Sunday, October 13th witness a perfect pairing with Pylon Reenactment Society and Azita! Pylon began as a project conceived by UGA art school roommates Randy Bewley and Michael Lachowski in the fall of 1978. The idea was to form a band, perform in NYC, get written up in New York Rocker and disband. Curtis Crowe heard them practicing from upstairs and brought his drums downstairs to the mix. Former classmate Vanessa Briscoe Hay was recruited to audition on February 14, 1979 after several other art school friends didn’t work out.

Two weeks later, they performed their first show above the local record shop Chapter Three Records. Shortly after this, the B-52’s caught them at a party out in the country. Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider thought that Pylon should go to NYC and helped by personally taking Pylon’s tapes around to clubs . Their help resulted in a gig opening for the Gang of Four at Hurrah. Instead of New York Rocker. they were written up in Interview Magazine by music critic Glenn O’Brien. What followed was a Cinderella story of sorts. Instead of disbanding, they decided to keep at it as long as it was fun. Along the way, Pylon opened for bands like Talking Heads, PIL, The B-52s and toured throughout the US, Canada and the UK. They also recorded two albums and three singles for Atlanta label DB Recs.

Pylon called it quits on December 1,1983, after deciding that the music business was too much business and not enough fun. This “last show” was documented for an unaired TV pilot and was later released in 2016 as Pylon Live by Chunklet.

More than a tribute band, Pylon Reenactment Society have written new songs with Pylon as their guiding star. PRS have delighted old Pylon fans while making new ones. PRS features original Pylon vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay, guitarist Jason NeSmith, bassist Kay Stanton and drummer Gregory Sanders.

Tuesday, August 20th: Chicago Soul Legacies: A Conversation & Performance with Zeshan B, Aaron Cohen, and James Porter

The Hideout will present a night of music and conversation on the legacy of Chicago soul featuring singer Zeshan B. Zeshan and his band will present songs from his album, O Say Can You See?, which was just released. Zeshan B’s music has always been about building community. His ideal includes building ties with musicians who share his love for timeless R&B and they work together to draw in classical orchestrations and jazz improvisation. His socially engaged songs detail struggles in American cities today, which he connects to a wider global consciousness—singing his original lyrics in English and the Urdu language of his South Indian grandparents. All of these elements highlight
his stunning new album. Zeshan’s take on classic R&B shaped his debut album, Vetted, in 2017. He then recorded an all- original set of music for the follow-up, Melismatic, two years later, which included the anthem, “Brown Power.” But just as it was released and he received international media acclaim, COVID struck and, like everyone, he struggled through isolation. So Zeshan focused on writing the songs that comprise O Say Can You See? “I feel that in the past seven years I’ve learned a lot about songwriting,” Zeshan says. “During this time, I put a lot of time and energy into developing my own compositional voice. The north star is still R&B and soul. The influences are multiple—and there are many that don’t necessarily fall into the genre of R&B and soul—but when it comes to the writing of the songs, soul and R&B are my home base.”

On sale now: Laraaji with Zander Raymond

Friday, September 6th, join us in welcoming Laraaji and Zander Raymond to the Hideout! Laraaji is an 81 year-young American multi-instrumentalist, and a pioneer of the new-age and ambient philosophies. In the early 70s, Laraaji lived in New York, admired Eastern mysticism, and performed in parks, playing a vintage stringed instrument called “zither.” In 1978, Brian Eno saw one of Laraaji’s street performances and helped him record and release an album called “Ambient 3: Day of Radiance.” The release introduced this American musician to a wide audience, and his next 40 albums made him a true legend of meditative music.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Richard Lloyd (Television) with Ganser

Big fat exciting show announcement: Guitar hero and legend of rock Richard Lloyd will be at the Hideout in just a couple of months along with Chicago’s Ganser!

https://hideoutchicago.com/event/richard-lloyd-television-with-ganser/hideout-chicago/chicago/

Richard Lloyd is an electric guitarist, singer/songwriter, and founding member of Television, a band that rose to fame with their 1977 debut release, Marquee Moon, widely regarded as one of greatest albums in rock and roll history and perhaps the most defining and highly influential release of the 1970’s New York rock scene. Lloyd embarked on a solo career after Television disbanded, releasing seven solo albums and working as a guitarist, session musician, and band member with Matthew Sweet, John Doe, Rocket from the Tombs, and more. Released in October 2017, Lloyd’s book, Everything Is Combustible: Television, CBGB’s and Five Decades of Rock and Roll: The Memoirs of an Alchemical Guitarist establishes Lloyd as a masterful storyteller and humorous and insightful writer with an acerbic and razor-sharp wit.

Monday, July 29th: SUSS with Hali Palombo

New York-based instrumental group SUSS plays a distinctive form of instrumental music sometimes referred to as “ambient country,” emphasizing the droning qualities of country music and Western film scores. Combining the high-lonesome sound of pedal steel guitars andharmonicas with meditative synthesizers and loops, the group’s music owes as much to Brian Eno’s collaborations with Daniel Lanois as to the film scores of Ennio Morricone and Ry Cooder.

The band’s self-released 2018 debut, Ghost Box, became a surprise underground hit and a
staple of ambient playlists, leading to the band’s signing with Northern Spy. The group continued expanding on their signature sound with numerous additional releases on the label, including the 2024 release of Birds & Beasts.

https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/84632005/peter-distefano-of-porno-for-pyrosmike-baggetta-of-mssvwith-maria-elena-silva-chicago-hideout-chicago

Two Sundays from now, legends Peter DiStefano of P***o for Pyros and Mike Baggetta of the Massive team up for the premier of a Punk Jazz Tour that lands somewhere between Albert Ayler and the Stooges via two electric guitars, electronics, and minimal vocals. Guitar hero Maria Elena Silva opens!

A founding member of the alternative rock band P***o For Pyros in 1992 with Perry Farrell, Stephen Perkins and Martyn LeNoble, guitarist Peter Distefano has been heard all over the world for decades with their first album reaching no. 3 on the Billboard Top 200. In addition to his work with Pyros, Peter has featured in various projects with Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus, and the band Hellride with Mike Watt. He is also known for his extensive recent work as a composer and musician for many soundtracks in film, television and gaming.

Iconoclastic guitarist Mike Baggetta is most recently known for leading his post-genre power trio mssv (with the legendary rhythm team of drummer Stephen Hodges and bassist Mike Watt) through multiple U.S. tours and album releases over the past 5 years, after releasing 2 additional albums of original music alongside Watt and drummer Jim Keltner. Baggetta’s music has always been adventurous in spirit and style, creating his identifiably undefinable sound with his guitar, voice and various musical gadgets. He has also appeared on stage and on recordings with Nels Cline, J Mascis, Petra Haden and David Torn.

Do you read? Do you love Bruce Springsteen? Do you have complicated feelings around the 4th of July? If so, please join us in welcoming Steven Hyden for a converstion with Robert Mitchum about his latest book: THERE WAS NOTHING YOU COULD DO: Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The U.S.A.” and the End of the Heartland on Tuesday, July 9th at 6:30!

https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/51855881/steven-hyden-in-conversation-with-rob-mitchumthere-was-nothing-you-could-dobruce-springsteens-born-in-the-usa-chicago-hideout-chicago

On June 4, 1984, Columbia Records issued what would become one of the best-selling and most impactful rock albums of all time. An instant classic, Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. would prove itself to be a landmark not only for the man who made it, but rock music in general and even the larger American culture over the next 40 years.

In THERE WAS NOTHING YOU COULD DO: Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In The U.S.A.”and the End of the Heartland (Hachette Books, 5/28/24) veteran rock critic Steven Hyden shows exactly how this record became such a pivotal part of the American tapestry. Alternating between insightful criticism, meticulous journalism, and personal anecdotes, Hyden delves into the songs that made—and didn’t make—the final cut, including the tracks that wound up on its sister album, 1982’s Nebraska. He also investigates the myriad reasons why Springsteen ran from and then embraced the success of his most popular (and most misunderstood) LP, as he carefully toed the line between balancing his commercial ambitions and being co-opted by the machine.

But the book doesn’t stop there. Beyond Springsteen’s own career, Hyden explores the role the album played in a greater historical context, documenting not just where the country was in the tumultuous aftermath of Vietnam and Watergate, but offering a dream of what it might become—and a perceptive forecast of what it turned into decades later. As Springsteen himself reluctantly conceded, many of the working-class middle American progressives Springsteen wrote about in 1984 had turned into resentful and scorned Trump voters by the 2010s. And though it wasn’t the future he dreamed of, the cautionary warnings tucked within Springsteen’s heartfelt lyrics prove that the chaotic turmoil of our current moment has been a long time coming. How did we lose Springsteen’s heartland? And what can listening to this prescient album teach us about the decline of our country? In There Was Nothing You Could Do, Hyden takes readers on a journey to find out.

About Steven Hyden
Steven Hyden is the author of Long Road, This Isn’t Happening, Twilight of the Gods, Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, and (with Steve Gorman) Hard to Handle. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Washington Post, Billboard, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Grantland, The A.V. Club, Slate, and Salon. History

The Hideout is a regular guy bar for irregular folks who just don’t fit in, or just don’t want to fit in. We didn’t choose the name; it has been called the Hideout since it opened (legally) in 1934.

The Hideout is a 100 year old balloon-frame house, built in two days, still here a century later. Hammers pounding in nails faster than the city could tear it down. Built by undocumented workers at the end of the 19th Century, run by undocumented bootleggers and gin runners, running numbers, racing horses, making deals, and moving in the make.

The Hideout is the place where the hard working man and the hard working hustler met for beer and eggs. Where the “26 girls” rolled the dice for dances and 10 cent drinks.

Born as a 19th Century Shanty, straight from the mud by ditch-digging Irishmen with dirty boots and hats, always hats, pushed aside by the nickel and dime Prohibition Era Sicilian button men. Cold War steel working Polish made way for the alternative, indie, free jazz, country, punk, post-rock of the 21st Century.
