Proposed Lake Erie National Marine Sanctuary would be an underwater shipwreck museum, advocates say The vast number of shipwrecks under Lake Erie's surface is one reason the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is proposing a National Marine Sanctuary here.

Shipwreck hunters discover a schooner's 142-year-old remains in Lake Michigan Built in 1867, the Trinidad was plagued with structural issues and sank nearly a century and a half ago. Historians intend to nominate it for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The first full-size digital scan of the Titanic has revealed the world’s most famous shipwreck as never seen before.

Created using deep-sea mapping, the unique 3D view of the entire vessel could break through “a century’s worth of human interpretation” about what happened to the liner as it made its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, an expert said.

A ship lost for more than a century was found in Lake Huron, confirming the tragic story behind victims' fates The Ironton, a 191-foot cargo vessel, collided with a grain hauler on a blustery night in September 1894, sinking both. The ship's captain and six sailors clambered into a lifeboat but it was dragged to the bottom before they could detach it from the ship. Only two survived.
