This week at Sciaky, we’re putting a spotlight 🔦 on TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries).
Earlier this year, we sold a big EBAM (Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing) machine to them, and it has a work envelope of 6m (19.6’) x 2m (6.5’) x 1.8m (5.9’). The machine can deposit metal at 20lbs (9kg)/hr and readily switches between additive manufacturing and welding modes.
What can TAI make with it? With ‘Aerospace’ in their name, you can guess.
We already covered our sale to them, but there are other considerations to come out of TAI’s purchase that are interesting to highlight, guessing aside.
One is that our EBAM machines decrease the company’s supply chain vulnerability. It uses a vacuum without any need for inert or shield gas. Conventional TIG/MIG welding and many additive manufacturing processes require these gases. They've reduced their supply chain vulnerability by removing the need for inert gas for welding or additive manufacturing.
Another is that the machine will reduce the net amount of metal needed per build, and even though this doesn’t remove supply chain issues from procuring a supply of alloys, it will reduce them.
With the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and COVID-19, there hasn’t been a country spared of some issue with supply chains, and both metals and purified gases were subject to shortages. Though Turkey has a large amount of domestic industry in both sectors, Turkey did have trade relations with Russia and Ukraine, which caused shortages.
Additive manufacturing is a way to reduce supply chain dependence and volatility today! The net cost for complex parts is typically better than forging methods.
TAI has a history of advocating for reducing Turkey’s vulnerability to foreign influence since they were founded in 1973. With EBAM, they’re taking their next step in fortifying Turkey’s industrial power.
We hope that you choose EBAM, and choose resilience with your production.
